Mk1 Escort now on 8.5" Banded Steels.

Recommended Posts

Seeing as Jo mentioned things need improving I decided to update again.

Since my last post I bought another Rs2000 propshaft. Which also failed. So I bit the bullet and bought a Grp4 Fabrications new one. Expensive but I am sick of problems with em.

And the exhaust needs a skid on the silencer as it catches and pulls the pipe loose. Did that today.

Will make a wee bit of clearance between the gearbox bellhousing and the bulkhead while under it.

Photos when I figure out how.

Comments welcome.

Thanks.

If you cant get to grips with posting pics you could send them to someone like Vista who will post them for you .

Thanks.

Posting pics is quite easy once you've done it once.

At the bottom right of the text box you type in is a tab for "more reply options" click that

At the bottom of the new box you'll see "attach files" & "choose file" click "choose file"

Choose the file you want to attach from wherever you have it saved and then click "attach this file"

Hit enter / return on your keypad to start a new line of text and then click "add to post"

Job done

Seeing as it is as low a a low thing, the leading edge of the silencer catches stuff.

This I have decided is why the damn thing keeps cracking, leaking and trying to fall off.

So I welded a wee skid on.

Nothing sexy but it should help.

Also I didnt bother to check UNDER where I was welding (I usually do)

Who knew sponges burned so damn well

When its running i will be changing the entire front suspension set-up in a bid to get some actual suspension.

Rs struts with lowered spring mounts, gaz short adjustable inserts, adjustable tca's so I can set the geometry right and a twin cam arb held by double width mounts.

All bought slowly since last september.

Still looking for a gearbox as well.

Various issues hampered progress over the last while but a programme of improvements has started now.

I have bought new rear springs and and Anti Tramp Bar kit. The springs will be de-cambered. Then I can get rid of the lowering blocks.

The type9 is replaced with a V6 version. Stronger and better geared.

The gearlever is a quickshift which rattles so I bought a standard shifter and an modifing it.

More planned but that lot will keep me occupied for a minute.

Since I posted this I stripped the car.

Then I had a bad crash where I was severly hurt.

Much better now but restricted in what I can do.

I just plod away though and things are finally happening.

I now have rebuilt my axle.

Its narrowed,  with new brakes, 3.77 gears and a quaife ATB differential.

Thanks.

Luckily my escort was not involved. Now that would have been unbearable :-)

I was in a POS work truck (Canter) hit a couple feet of standing water under a bridge.....then the actual bridge.

Anyway. No photos cos everyone knows what a wire looks like, I've been chasing my tail trying to get her started but no luck. Then while testing for the 11'tee millionth time I found an intermittent break in the earth between the coil and the dizzy. I'll replace it tomorrow and hopefully have a running escort again.

Bit more detail.

After buying 2 (2 Piece) Rs propshafts and then a made up (Sierra front & escort rear )propshaftall of which failed I bought one off GRP4 Fabrications and its been faultless.

Then seeing as the car was idle I decided to replace the gearbox.

The one I'd fitted was borrowed.

So I started searching online until I found a V6 2.8i type for sale.

Of course it turned out to be a diesel one LOL

But I eventually got one. Then I swapped a bunch of Mk2 escort bits for an alloy RS bellhousing, clutch fork and bearing.

The engine is now just repainted as it has only 3k since a full rebuild. The twin 40's were WAY too thirsty so I've replaced them with a 32/34 Weber.

God it was good to get the driveline back in (note for yanks..a drive line starts at the engine and finishes at the driven wheel. What you call a driveline is a propshaft)

So.

Trials and tribulations.

The car wont start. Comp test says all is good.

Fuel is flowing.

Plugs tested in a lawnmower show spark.

Eventually discovered the dizzy is working intermittently which is so hard to find.

Got a replacement module but it didn't work on my dizzy!

Got a dizzy from a mk2 Fiesta now.

Also borrowed a LYNX intake manifold off a mate. I am sort of trial running this instal as he will fit it in his own car this winter or spring.

My intake is for a 1300 and the carb 32/34 wont fit.

Collecting a new manifold soon though.

I also tidied the garage a bit with some wood rescued from a skip.
