Blacktop to escort mk2

Recommended Posts

Ok ,so I have read loads of different topics on this conversion and i am baffled with info.I have  2.0 focus automatic blacktop from 2003 focus (series 3 engine??)with only 54k on it.I have my crossflow removed, purchased inlet mani and set bike carbs plus No DizPro set up, from very helpful DanSt engineering, so I am looking at sumps conversion. The blacktop I have has the 2 piece alloy/steel sump. What do I need to do and is it possible to buy exchange  converted sump to suit or will I have to remortgage to buy new one. I got 1.8 cvh Sierra sump ,pickup and the side steel strenghtened plate for bolt holes at reasonable money so I took my chances on buying it anyway.Does this need to be modified also? I would think it has to be cut and shut as its probably too deep to fit as is? Any advice welcome.Anyone you could recommend to do the modification properly.

I removed the focus alternator and bracket but it has fan belt pulley bolted to the bracket.I purchaed the 1.8 escort waterpump but it comes without  pulley so do I need to purchase ribbed pulley and how does the set up work. I know I will have to buy alternator bracket to take standard Lucas type alternator so I will contact Retro Ford for that maybe.

I will buy engine mounting brackets obviously but what rubbers do I use to fit to mk2 escort standard subframe (not World Cup type).

I have 1.8 cvh flywheel and will be using type 9 box with the type 9 engine backplate/spacer .Will the type 9 bellhousing match the blacktop in all boltholes or just the top 5/6 bolts as obviously there will be no bottom bellhousing bolts holes. What cover plate do I use and I presume I will be using pinto clutch disc but do I use pinto cover plate and redrill flywheel to suit bolt holes?/ Or mondeo/escort type cover plate? And what release bearing ??Sites suggest QH,CCT133 bearing

I know this is big ask but I would rather try to have it right than mess around and get no oil pressure or something stupid going wrong.

I will have to get water rail but thats easy enough sorted.

Loads of Q's and i'll try and answer some!

Std. two piece sump throw away as it'd take more time and money than its value to modify satisfactorily.

Sierra sump if one piece steel and rear bowl the it can be cut and shut - i've put 2 pictures below of the apparent required dims.

Whether it is successful is a moot point as the Blacktops are supposedly a bit weak / flexxy around the lower crankcase

so rely / benefit from the additional rigidity from an alloy sump - the alloy escort one is the usual choice to 'cut & shut' - or

the Retroford one!

All the Blacktop waterpumps are the same so buying an Escort one from a Silvertop is pointless and it wouldn't fit anyway.

If you are wanting to simplify the belt run then you either need to buy a reverse rotation impeller for the B.Top pump and a

ribbed pulley or keep std pump and smooth pulley and add one idler / jockey wheel to take the place of the PS pump.

Engine mount rubbers - std 50mm mk2 Escort rubbers work........38mm's may work depending on your sump clearance to

the crossmember / steering rack.

1.8 CVH flywheel - Hmmm - no idea! Not heard of that one being used - Most use a 1.8 Zetec type and re-drill for the Pinto

cover and plate although there are a few odd permutations that others have arrived at! Dirt shield depends on the bellhousing

used - I used an RS2000 alloy one so has that type - Retroford Stainless.Obviously it has to suit the starter position.

I, like you, couldn't be faffing around with leaks and oil pressure / delivery problems and lifting engine in and out so when the

commercial tried & tested route and used Retroford stuff - it fits, it works but it costs..........do it once but do it right!

Hi , is there any issue with removing the upper alloy sump section and using the full cvh sump with mods as above. I have read removing the upper alloy sump can cause the block to be weaker??Seems strange. Also read that the front two conrods?? will hit the cvh front sump section when cranked over.I can chek that easily with alloy sump section taken off.So first thing tomorrow its off with both sump sections and get the angle grinder out.I need to get this sorted asap so I can start building the engine back up for fitting

Hi Mike are the dimensions in previous reply similar to yours??

Also will the wing need to be on side that has drain plug.If so I presume you rewelded for bung in on the new winged piece?. Sorry for questions but I just want to get it right.

Have you used a CVH flywheel and if so which model starter motor ?

Ok Hello ,so alloy and steel sump off as is plastic oil pickup.I tried up the CVH sump but as informaed all the bolt holes are approx half a hole out.Now I could elongate the sump holes but there are also sump holes that have nothing to screw in to especially at the front of engine.Maybe the silvertop has different hole positions.I think my cvh sump on blacktop would be prone to leaks if fitted.Maybe best to get Retro Ford sump to suit? Anyone know who supplies  the reverse type waterpump impellar or is there a suitable pump available.I know I can use extra idler if neccessary but for neatness the reverse impellar sounds good. Also waht starter motor suits the zetec with CVH flywheel?? I have the cvh flywheel here so might save me more money....Cleaned out with the cost of bits to convert.

Got mine direct from IKE - was a bit cheaper! Its a niche market item - someone had to CAD / CAM it, then commit to a production run of maybe 50 units ....... I think the cost is entirely justified!

Ah ok ,I just thought it was pricey but I get your point of CAD etc. In the bigger picture of the cost of other related bits its not too bad.

Whats your opinion on the CVH sump as in pics above

Looking for either 1600 or 1800 Escort or Fiesta only alloy sump ,not Mondeo or Focus apparentyl for modification by G19 Engineering.---Got one today on the fleabay

Also looking for Raceline or Dunnell water rail not RF please

Ok so I have ordered the water rail (Raceline) and the gearbox riser/crossmember etc.Nearly done on the purchasing dept.I cut the old flange of the exhaust(header to cyl head) and I have lad making me a new 10mm stainless flange to pattern.I will then, when engine is in etc, drop car to specialist exhaust maker ,mostly uses Magnaflow, and get full  2in system made up to suit.I took chance and enlarged the flange outlets from 43mm to  46mm so I can use 45mm OD pipes to form manifold /collector etc and weld to suit.Hoping to get something nice similar to Race type manifold rather than Asdley boring type.!!

Ok so I started to fit  Tiger bits ie idler pulley, alternator pulley(I had to cut keyway out of the new alloy pulley as I think the lucas type keyway IS required),so an hour later alt pulley on ,I fitted the bottom alternator bracket no problem but the top bracket does not fit well.I think maybe spacers are needed behind the top bracket as it wont sit flat anyway near the position it should be in(bottom ex manifold bolt and ???.Need slightly longer flywheel bolts as my engine was automatic 2.0 and had the thin ring gear type flywheel with short bolts.Fitting 5.5kg lightened flywheel when bolts arrive. Inlet manifold fitted for the bike carbs and looking nice.Waiting on G19 to modify the sump for hopefully late next week or early following week. I googled the alternator bracket but any pics available are difficult to see exactly how the top alt bracket fits.Any help ??

Update.G19 sump due in next few days.Engine /box ready to drop in so next query is.......Rad hosing.I got early Polo rad which is great fit to mk2 escort but I have Raceline rail and want to keep heater.I checked RF website but any ideas on pipework/direction of flow and any diagragms .I might do hosing myself with Gates hoses (shaped of course ,not rolls) but not sure if they have specific bends/Tee off,s etc.RF hsoing may not suit the Raceline rail apparently as outlet is in different position.I will try to upload pics .

Who supplies cooling hoses to suit Raceline rail( RF do not apparently)and I need bottom hose also plus heater hosing etc. I checked Samco and similar but buying bends/tees/straights etc and make up as you go along.I could do this but I would like neat straight fit hoses preferably.
