An Australian Twincam for sale in the UK

Recommended Posts

I just happened to stumble across this car for sale in the UK.

http://www.avantgardecars.co.uk/cars/ford-escort-twin-cam/

The company looks very upmarket.

They say the car has been in the UK since 2008. I have actually seen a page or two about this car before so it must have changed hands a couple of times.

Anyone here have any links with this car or know anything about it?

I think it's been for sale here for some time. It's a premium price and, rightly or wrongly, people over here expect Twin Cams to be white.

It seems to get around as It was for sale at Bonhams at one point.

The colour thing does seem to bother some people. On one of the trading sites this car was for sale a British Twincam owner categorically stated that it wasnt the cars original colour. Mind you there are things on it they are being passed off on the car as original because its Australian Spec but they definitely arent original. I was just wondering if anyone had seen it in the flesh at shows or something?

Which bits would you say aren't original Australian spec? It does look weird in that colour but in a good way if that makes sense!

Would have thought interior door frames would have been finished in satin black ? Are those the correct steel wheels ? Apart from that a bloody horrible colour

Whilst I'm not a fan of the bodywork colour I like the interior

Its actually the interior thats not genuine. Australian Twincams never got high back seats till '72 and even then they didnt look like racing seats with the side support those ones have. If you think of the boring vinyl seat that went into a Mk2 GL and thats close to the high back type in a later Twincams. All early Twincams like this are low back and dont recline and the whole seat tilts forward to get into it using a button at the base to release the latch. Whoever restored that car must have paid big money to have those seats totally custom made. It has a hint of later UK Mk1 RS seats done in beige to match the door trims

The colours of Australian Twincams can be a bit whacky. Im not sure that car is its original colour as it appears to be Jewel Green and that didnt come out until the year after but its hard to pin Ford Australia down on colours sometimes. If your not sure about this green what about a colour called "Wild Violet" Thats the fancy name for metallic purple! Most common Twincam colour I have seen is red. But thats the only purple one I have ever seen images of.

As you can see this car still has the low back seats and its a 71 model. It should be noted that I have driven over a dozen Twincams over the years and not a single one had beige trim, they all had black interiors. Never even seen a beige trimmed one in real life which is odd but there seems to be a number of them judging by the photos I have come across online.

All things considered though some bits may not be original that Green one is as good as an Australian Twincam gets. The fit and finish from the factory was dodgy at best so in that respect its probably even better than new.

I saw an Australian twin cam at brooklands historic auction last year no where near as good as the green one go for 27000 , it was a light bronze colour and really suited it , had a nice interior from what I remember but not like the green one , probably can't see much out of those green mirrors but I quite like them ..

Good deduction. No they arent the correct wheels. Twincams which were the top of the line Escort of their day were given wider and styled steel wheels, never hubcaps.

Beige interior Mk1s did sometimes (but not always) have the inside of doors a very dull brownish colour but they were never as bright a beige as the trim themselves. That one is a bit bright to be honest. Much better car than mine though.

I've got a 68 with the early doors and someone had put plastic type mirrors on it , they've now gone but I'm left with two holes , the bullet ones that you can buy from eBay would cover them but I think they look a bit cheap but those on the green one could pass for being around in that era .

Hello , I have seen these and they are ideal really but , they sound quite long and the pictures on eBay don't really give you an idea of what they look like on an escort from the side , think they are for yanks but haven't seen any up close on a Capri escort Anglia etc

Ive got a pair for my mk1 Tina, very good quality and good size mirror glass. Had some bullit ones and the reflection quality was crap. I got mine off FLEABAY not so long ago when they put a start price of £31 and luckily for me no other bids.

Unlike the escort, the Tina never had door mirrors. So I got them for what I thought would be a period look not to obtrusive and a good mirror glass. When your used to looking in mirrors 12"x6" all day I need a good quality small mirror to save me having to focus to much

Its actually quite a coincidence that you have posted on this thread as the wheels you have as your avatar are the ones Australian Twincams were given from the factory. They werent alloy but all steel. I didnt know how to describe them but there is the design plain as day as your avatar.

Bizarrely Australian Twincams seem to get different mirrors with each year. The 1970 models like mine had the bullet style mirrors although they werent chrome metal like you see the aftermaket ones. They were painted body colour with the back piece that held the mirror in black. On the green one they tried to paint it silver but it didnt quite work. The early 71 Twincams got mirrors like the purple one for a brief time and then later 71 and onto 72 all Escorts had a standardised plastic mirror that the entire Ford range used on Escorts Cortinas and Falcons right up to the end of the Mk2 Escort era. Ugly things they were although many seem to like them. The ones like that on the green car do work sort of but its more about moving your head and vision about till you see what you need too. They are too small just to divert your eyes and see everything behind you. You will never find them for sale as they are quite rare the original plastic ones but no need with the better made metal chromes ones available to you. Thats what I would go for. I remember having a judge at a concours tell me he would have voted for my car but I didnt have the original mirrors as he had never even seen them on an Escort before but they are pictured in the original manual.

Dunno but today I saw a bronze RS1600 totally mint that's gonna be for sale soon, my eyes nearly popped out until I went round the corner and saw 5-6 twinks, another RS1600, a mk1 Cortina Lotus AND a 4 door mk1 Mex (yes its real!)

Its not politically correct any more to call for "Whites Only" in the Twincam world. So embrace what the Italians do and always have a red version on offer.
