Burton power are shite.

As I have discussed last week, I rang to order an edge starter cog for my RS from Burton on Tuesday. The guy told they'd got them in stock so would get it posted out. Brilliant I thought, thinking it would be here on maybe Thursday/Friday. Nope, it didn't turn up and neither Saturday. Thinking they may have posted it out to my old address back in sheffield, (although i did tell them my new address) I thought I would ring on Saturday afternoon. I was informed that it was out of stock so I won't get it until the back end of this week now.

It's only a good job I wasn't going to any meets. ?

Anyone else had shite service like that.

They are notorious for claiming things are in stock yet after you order you find out that don't really have it. They sometimes don't even bother to contact you tell you its not in stock leaving you to chase them for an explanation when it doesn't arrive. Some sellers try to bluff you into thinking they have things in stock but in fact they get the item dispatched directly from the wholesaler. You order and afterwards they find out the wholesaler in fact is out of stock. Rarely will you get an apology from Burtons. I have had better results with Motorsport Tools UK but they have slipped up a couple of times as well but at least they make an effort to correct it.

The chap did say he has discounted it as an apology. I thinks that's worth about £1.40. And he'll discount my next purchace. I know even with a discount it'll still be dearer than buying elsewhere. Trouble is I can't seem to find the part elsewhere so I'm a bit stuck. I'll look on motorsport tools.

Might be worth when you get it, take it to a small local engineering firm and see what sort of cost it would be to copy it in a decent material.

Yeah, might be an idea mate, but as much as I find it expensive, I think an engineering company might be more expensive.

I gotta say I've ordered a fair few bits from them an they always been pretty quick and the stuff seems good too, maybe the stuff I got is fairly generic though?

Mechanical fuel pump, ignition parts etc?

As above, ive had a fair amount of stuff from them through the years, rarely any problems.

To be fair, i've not had problems before.

Well they said I should have it today or tomorrow, but the part on site was still showing 1-3 days for ordering. So I can't see me getting it this week.

So if you don't get it when they say, their filling you full of crap then ? Why not tell the truth in the first place and avoid any aggro ?

Don't know mate, but I will be very wary of using them again in the future where possible.

When you look at their catalogue theres no way they could stock all that, they, i imagine have assurances from their suppliers? The problem ultimately ends at burtons but may have come from further up the chain?  The bit you wanted was not specialised but not exactly popping in for a set of spark plugs?

Apparently they have a massive warehouse. When you call the guy on the phone he orders the parts on a computer which then get order picked with another guy in the warehouse. It only becomes apparent that they have run out when the picker tells them.

That tells me the system has a flaw where parts are not refreshed when getting low. The computer is only as good as the guy who tells it what to do. That's one shite computer.?

Hmmmm! I can't believe any company that has many 000's of parts, bits and pieces that doesn't use computer controlled stocktaking and inventory assessment. Obviously if you have many products from one supplier you won't be ordering up one product so collating a few lines to make a meaningful single order, so I can see delays occuring ? Admittedly if the person taking the order can see a zero stock it would be a courtesy to inform you - but then they possibly lose the order - rock and a hard place I guess!

That's the thing they don't have all these parts in stock they only claim too. They reply on instant dispatch from some of their suppliers to get the parts to them or directly to you under the guise of having it in stock. Troubles arise when the level of stock at the suppliers is not updated to their website as it should. Thus parts that aren't in stock with the suppliers are still showing as in stock at Burtons thinking the suppliers has the item available. I had a large order delayed for weeks because one set of brake pads that was said to be in stock at Burtons was in fact not in stock with the suppliers. No one throughout the whole process bothered to contact me to tell me this (probably because that would be an admission that their "in stock" label was dubious), they simply delayed all the other items they had in the entire order. No one followed it up. Only when my order didn't arrive several weeks later I wrote to ask what was going on, only then did they tell me the pads were in fact not really in stock and that every thing was delayed. The pads were not meant to arrive for another couple of months and they simply would have let everything slide for that entire length of time. I asked to have the issue forward to Andy Burton. They refused. So too did they refuse to even offer an ounce of an apology, they were just snippy that they had been called out on the matter. They then even got ruder still with the surprise when I cancelled the whole order as if they somehow deserved to maintain the sale. That was by no means the first time I had issues with them but it was certainly the last. But I doubt if they even care. Their target are fresh saps who don't know any better rather than loyal repeat customers.
