RFChris
...yes, i said the dreaded 'D' word. I was wondering, what with the availability of kits and parts to adapt a Zetec from say, a Mondeo, would it be possible to adapt a turbo-diesel in the same way using the bits? Don't worry, it's not for the Cortina. I found myself wondering if it would work and figured you'd be the best lot to ask. Chris
V8ian
The hated Practical Performance car is or has built a Diesel powered caterham style car so the idea is obviously a feasable idea. TDCis I think are Ford based, maybe Mazda, but if that is the case, I would think the bellhousing fitment wont be a problem, Either a type 9 or Mazda MX5 would fit the bill, Clutches would have to be looked at, and probably be availalable thru the Ford/Mazda Parts bin, Possibly some of the RWD mazda small trucks may be a good source, Are the new late model Transits TDCI, they are available in either FWD or RWD, How you go about sorting the electronics I am not sure. Plenty of RWD engines to fit, Sherpas used the venrable Pug Diesel with a 5 speed on the back, so there is the first option, I think the Sierra 2.3 also was a Pug, so the bellhousing from a type 9 to a Pug may exist, Small BMW diesels may be an option as well, also Mercs are RWD and diesel powered, Just seen this on the NSRA site. http://www.nsra.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=42448 Ian
Fiesta Steve
Wouldn't sierra and transit diesel stuff almost bolt straight in ?
oliwally
Wouldn't jelly mould and transit diesel stuff almost bolt straight in ? But why would you want the pug 2.3 Biggest pile-o-poo going. Transit 2.4 tdci then yeah but there's loads of wiring and modules that need sorting and you have to use the dash from them too. RFChris
just stick to proper engines!! I rack up over 50k a year, need something wallet friendly but cool. It'd have to be a newer engine though, something with a bit of poke.
Mr Sam
i was introduced to the sheer brilliance of diesels when talkin to a mate in a carpark slightly smiling at this diesel 205 chugging away thinkin yeah wee'l have some fun with this without askin spec a we all pop off down to the pub........well no one told me it had a full re-build custom turbo methonol injection etc etc etc it was estimated at 160bhp and well over 200 ft torque as it would see off another guys mk6 RS2000 easily, he also saw off a wrx round a corner also know the jabba sport guys, theyve got a rather nippy skoda diesel id say go for it, just rember how long is a ford gearbox going to withstand all the torques
GT_Jim
i think there is a bellhousing in america that mats a supra box to the vag 1.9s which are really good for diesels

bortaf
Not long sold an ex diesel Mk3 cortina/taunus pick up. easy job, 5ierra 1.8 TD unit and box (T9) reverse the pinto engine mounts and it's in, cant really get more simple than that can ya the exhaust is even on the same side as a pinto You need to use the diesel box as it's basicly a V6 box with a deeper bellhousing (4pot) to allow for the longer input shaft 45 MPG + and quicker than a 1.6 pinto in the same car Early 1.8 mondeo lump is the same just more leccy gubbins fit an intercooler, wind the pump up and i think piper even do a cam for the 1.8 Bit noisy though but miles better than the 2.3 pug/granny lump, the 2.5 TD is better as found in the LDV400 (not the later convoy they use transit lumps), transit 2.5 weigh about the same as an Essex V6 so forget going round corners I'm turbo dieseling me Mk3 corty at the mo, just need to find a P100 TD or swap me spare EFI pinto for an engine

V8ian
I still fancy a Mk3 Zephyr Abbot Estate with 3.5 litre BMW diesel and 6 speed box, that would be a real tow car

Gibson
im telling ya vauxhall vectra 3litre turbo diesel V6! they are stonkingly good engines and ive driven a few! they launch the new vectra like a rubber band and that weighs 1.6 tonnnes! and do like 40-50mpg! http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... ght=signum
Tom100e
The Mk3 Tina I bought recently has a turbo diesel motor in it...so far stock and not too exciting (but that might be down to a clogged/dirty/messed up intercooler and incorrect gearing...) It's a 1.7 Isuzu engine from a 90's Gemini mated to a granada 5 speed (only had the car for a week and have not had the time to crawl underneath it to have a proper looksee at what lies beneath) via a custom made adapter. Just FYI... a 2.3 engine has been very successfully turboed (think comparing with a stock cossie at the strip...) over here (Malta) and we also have some pretty quick street/strip diesels.... so maybe its not all that improper if done well
ALL4SHOW
about 20yrs ago my brothers mate had a mk5 cortina with a transit engine in it as he worked for the council he got his diesel at a *discount* & as said above ive seen that fiesta 1.8 diesel running rwd in a magazine & i had a vectra tdci hire car for a few months & yes it was quick but it was very thirsty the thing i would think of is just like petrol engines the newer the engine the more sensors & electric/wiring you have to do my mate did a mk4 escort 1.3 to a 1.6 diesel in a day with the cars sat next to each other just the odd bit of wiring & re plumming
