At a quick glance you could mistake them for Opel wheels!

Your Right! That metalic Olive green was an Opel 1900 GT Colour too, I remember seeing one on Wheeler Dealers

Australian Vs British Twincam

While its nice to see a British Twincam in colour, particularly these deep earth tones, I think its the choice of wheels that make the Australian car the winner here.

Those mirrors though are hideous.

Its a bit unfair comparing mirrors between the two.

That's how you tell what year model it is though. It differs from 1970, 71 and 72.

So there were 2 other hideous mirror types as well lol?

Now that's just being mean!

First Type are actually just Bullet Mirrors

Twincam2s.jpg.a514a1911850c4884e9b7c810c2e8d93.jpg

Second Type is a unique streamlined design for 1971

AllFord43.thumb.jpg.b7cf29a1049c1325e60861131ce90b14.jpg

WhiteTwincam14.thumb.jpg.60ec5b89d83a0d5bd112f6cf76fac292.jpg

The third type for the Twincams of 1972 and became the standard Escort mirror from 72 all the way till the end of the Mk2 Escort line 1981. (It was also the standard mirror for all Cortinas, Capris and Falcons of the same period)

TwincamBubble.thumb.jpg.3821fc27f5465eb94fecfb0fa43f4edd.jpg

AllFord42.thumb.jpg.0590fc8485698239ccbc67e0261ccfe2.jpg

With my Mk2 Rally Pack now adorning a pair of metal European remote RS mirrors even though its a unique Australian model it should not be inferred that I also believe the last style of Escort mirrors are in any way hideous cheap plastic crap. I have been assured some locals in their minds think they look good.

An unprintable word springs to mind !!!

Oh really, that bad? I wouldn't keep them white of course. There has to be something out there for my Twincam other than Minilites and 4 spokes

It has a Japanese Enkei 4 spoke on it at the moment. If you scroll up you can catch a glimpse of them on the tail shot of the car. They arent as pristine as that now though as sittle idle for so long has taken its toll hence the search for something new.

I do like steelies on Mk1s make no mistake. They do really suit Mexicos and the like, it just that they dont have the same model association for Twincams here as they do for Mk1s over there. Also mine is a deluxe version fitted with the fake woodgrain trim that Im in in the process of searching for proper veneers to match my steering wheel just to give it a more genuine British Sportscar feel rather than the fake stick on wood and plastic it had originally. I just have it in my mind steelies are more suited to the minimalist type Mexico styling where alloys would be more suited for mine. That said I haven't seen anything better than a good set of steelies so in the end that may well be the way I go. I just keep holding out for something but have no idea what Im holding out for. But I have to agree with you what I have had to work with over here isn't what you would call an abundance of good taste. To be clear also I do like RS 4 spokes I have them on my Mk2 and its for that reason looking for something different for the Mk1. Mind you if I had access to proper Mk1 RS wheels I would probably be content as there is enough difference to distinguish them from the later type I have.

Couldn't work out which car in this thread was yours.

How about Revolution 4 spokes?

http://www.revolutionwheels.com/wheels/road/4-spoke-classic/

LOL Its the Orange one with the word number plate.

Revolutions have been suggested to me before and they are a nice wheel but they suit the more modified later cars than much chromed early Mk1 trying to keep its classic look. I was even thinking the other day a set would look good on a Mk1 Fiesta but not an early original looking Mk1 Escort unfortunately.

What does a set of Mk1 RS alloys fetch at the moment?

A fair bit, I haven't seen a genuine set of 5.5j mk1 RS alloys for sale for a while either. JBW don't do a copy of the 5.5J wheel either.

hi rallypack 2000, postage from holland to you would be 105 euro's, the wheels could be taped together, they will be 55 cm by 32,5 cm, and it's possible to sent them bij post, i got a friend in belgium near by, who i think has a set, they are the 5.5 inch rims, i am not sure if they are escort or capri, but i could look at the cast numbers, i think if i gave him 50 euro's for the set of 4, he would be glad, i have to say they are ugly, but i think they are not scratsed, if they are something for you i will ask him, cheers marcel

Reallly Marcel? Your friend has a set he doesnt want for himself? I didnt even realise there were Capri ones has well? I wonder what the differences are? You really have the best network of people and parts! Im certain he could make more money that that for them I would image? I would have thought it would cost alot more money to send all that way. I had this strange idea I would have to have any wheels individually wrapped and sent as 4 parcels! I always thought any original wheels would have to be restored anyways so would not expect them to be pretty. It certainly cant hurt to ask about them. Im definitely interested.

Go to the "How To" room and there's an RS alloy wheel guide you can download. The 5.5J Capri JPS wheels are mentioned in there. They are visually similar but have a smaller centre bore hole (63mm instead of 70mm I think) so the mk1 RS push through centre cap doesn't fit unless you have the hole machined out.

I had a set on my white mk1-proper 5 1/2s-they fetch good money now much more than a decent set of RS 6"s. And you can't really compare Mex steelies to Twink ones-Mex ones are a lot more fussy than plain Twink ones with caps.

I vaguely remember Capri RS wheels as being flat but noted on your PDF thats the RS3100 versions which were the only cars ever sold here with 4 spoke wheels, and they were flat with no dish at all. I didn't know there was a second Capri type as well. If the wheels were being refurbished it wouldn't be too much of a issue to have them machined to 70mm. The thing would be can you get caps these days or a nice replica? I seem to create a storm when I search for small plastic trim bits LOL

Just going back through the thread to prevent double posts I noticed that there are only photos of mine from the rear in this thread. They have been posted elsewhere in other threads over the years though so many of you have seen them before but cant remember where so here is a set all in one place.

Alas the paint has started to flake on the roof of the drivers side having faced the sun on that side under the carport. So it not as shiny as when I took it to an RS Club Show.
