MK1 Escort - Worth re painting

This is my 1968 MK1 Escort.

I was originally a 1300 super, but now runs a 1760 x-flow.

The interior has leather Recaro seats, wheels are RS 4 spokes.

I am thinking of having it resprayed as the bodywork looks good from a distance, but close up it needs spraying, there is a few rust spots here and there (no holes or rot tho).

I would like to replace the front panel as it needs tidying and I would like to fit round headlamps.

I would possibly change the decals to RS2000 styling, and change the wheels to a new set of Midland wheels RS 4 spokes as tyres need changing anyway.

So here is my question and advice I am after.

Will it be worth the cost having it resprayed, and what sort of cost could I be looking at for a respray?

What sort of value could the car be worth as it stands now, and then what value after.

I could never sell it as the wife bought it for me as a wedding present btw.

I was taken aback somewhat by the quotes I was given to paint my Mk1. They ranged from £2k right up to £7k. The £7k quote was a "ball park figure but could increase once work was started"

I asked the £2k guy what I could expect for the money. He said a "any obvious dings or dents will be filled and rubbed back. It will have a blow over of paint then a flat and polish." It would look "good as new" apparently ;-P

The £7k guy was more about cutting out any rust, replacing panels as and when needed, windows and doors out, he mentioned lacquer whereas the £2k guy didn't. It certainly seemed a more "comprehensive" job to be honest. The £7k also included the engine bay and boot but the cheaper quote didn't mention those areas so who knows?!?!

Interestingly, the £2k guy had a great argument/ selling point though. "What's the point in spending 10 grand or so on a minter job. It'll probably get scratched, develop rust or get nicked! You're better keeping the 8 grand you'll save for repairs in the future!"

What is it insured at currently? Does it have an agreed value?

as a bare shell, stripped to bare metal, just to paint, no welding/repair or replacement of panels, but filling any voids amd making panels look right where needed, i would expect 5-10k, depending on spray shop, anything less would be a sub std job, and the more you pay the better the job

what i would say is this, dont ever fall into the trap its not rusty or even rotten, as unless the car has been through a recent resto, you may not be able to see it, and the moment you start removing parts to spray a car, you will find it, believe me

my advice would be to accept its there, seen or not, but use the car, until the point it either becomes an MOT issue or you cant live with it any further, then go down the road of a resto, as once you start, it just keeps on coming

theres also the part, where once you go past a certain stage, ie the fortune you have spent on that paint job, you become frightened to use the car for the risk of damage to it, another reason to enjoy it first

Respectfully, if anyone who has restored a car is then frightened to use it, that restoration becomes, in my opinion, utterly pointless.

These are drivers cars whatever spec they're in and the greatest pleasure they give is in being used and seen to be used. I spent an eye watering sum restoring and modifying my van but I use it to travel up and down the country transporting the site stand paraphernalia and merchandise to shows hundreds of miles from home, all year round and in all weathers. I wouldn't have it any other way and accept readily that there may be a price to pay at some point. That's just upkeep.

with total espect Scott, you obviously have the money to keep throwing at your cars without worrying,  im not saying that is wrong, in fact its nice to see your cars kept that way, and yes your right, they were designed to be driven, but you have to look at the other side of the coin, firstly, most of us dont have the money to keep throwing at them, we get one chance, and when you get into it that deep financially, trailer queens are often the result, not intentional, thats life, and in most instances, me included, we didnt start out the restoration to necesarily to either go that deep or expect to go that deep, again it becomes addictive and financially keeps the most poor, and thats why some people spend donkeys years doing their cars up, becuase they become that animal and financial pit most cant really afford, resulting in that frightened to drive condition

For me, the original question said it all, the questions asked, means to me, that there is not necesarily fortunes available to spend on it, if there was, the questions would never have been asked

I have a trusted chap who does the bodywork on my cars, including paint, he is 100 if he is a day and real old skool bodywork/painter guy. I asked him for a rough idea of cost for a reasonable old classic for a respray. I specifically asked him about a job which wouldn't be a show car but good enough for the man in the street to be proud of it.

His thinking was that a ball-park price for a respray would be to a good standard would be;

Remove and refit body fittings, bumpers, lamps, mouldings etc…. - £800

Prepare and respray vehicle, including door shuts and inside of doors - £1600

Paint and consumable materials - £850

Plus any additional repairs such as dents or rust

plus VAT

If you wished to change the colour, £320 plus VAT would allow for the engine and boot compartments to be resprayed.

Hope that is of some help.

Look into shipping it somewhere and getting a lot more for your money .....I can remember a few years it was so much cheaper sending stuff to Poland and people who did it getting better quality for a lot less..

Yes did read a few horror stories, but heard more positives ..

My Anglia was £800 to be painted in two colours, prep was done by me. I was well chuffed with the result but the painter only did it because I put a lot of work his way. No painter likes painting over someone else's prep work. But he did it on the understanding I never told anyone who painted it because he said my prep work was not up to his standard. Fairing enough by me I'm happy. The Tina on the other hand was delivered to the painter shot blasted and etch primed with a ball park figure of £4500 which I thought was more than enough and if it's not flipping good he's not getting paid. Anything over 5k to me is extortionet unles there say arches to blend in and a fair few panels to replace.
