Capri rear leaf spring

Recommended Posts

hey

so the springs on my mk1 are as slack as a 90 year old pair of boobs, was thinking about what to replace it with an I see Capri single leaf springs are a popular choice.

however I read somewhere that there's a fair bit of adaption needed? is that correct or do they fit as they are??

I should be able to tell you shortly as mine have just arrived, on first looking you may have to use the Capri rear shackle as the size or the rear eye is considerably larger. As for the axle location pin believe to be in the same position. One mod I did to mine was to re-drill this 11/2 further back to centralise the wheel in the w/ arch. Got mine 2.8 from a local factor for £70 + vat.

I just bought uprated Gartrac de cambered springs for mk1 Escort for my Corsair (Mk1 Cortina in drag). Just had to drill out the rear bush and they fitted straight on without moving pins or owt. Axle sits central in arch.

It depends on what shackles you are using. The spring itself (as from Gartrac) cames with a rear bush that has a 3/8" dia hole. My spring shackles are Capri ones that have a 11mm bolt. I think the original Corsair/cortina maybe also 3/8". Its enlarge not elongate by the way

I fitted them to my mk2 Cortina, I had to enlarge the axle locating pin hole slightly and they bolted straight on.

I know this is going back a bit, but 2.8 single Capri springs (50mm) do fit the mk1 cortina. Axle locating pin exactly the same as mk1. Front bolt goes through no problem. Rear shackle I extended by 1" and enlarged the hole in the spring bush to 10mm and same for the newly extended shackles due to the increased size of rear eye on Spring. The front bush outer diameter on the Capri springs appeared to be larger than the cortina one, but you get new bushes in the springs anyway, if you wanted to polybush would suggest using Capri bushes.

as col said the wheel isn't very central in the arch, I went about it another way by welding a new plate to the axle with new location hole drilled to suit, this was also  set up as a wedge to give me approx 5 degrees of diff nose angle
