Streetfighter
I've got camber, castor and toe adjustment on my racked MK1 Cortina, but on full lock (forward and reverse) I get this weird scrubbing/hopping feeling through the steering wheel. Wondering what camber, castor and toe figures people are running on Cortinas, Escorts and so on that don't experience this little feature.
colr6
I've got 11/2 deg of camber,3deg castor and tracking 0. Who or what is the rack set up?
Streetfighter
Modified MK1 Escort setup, but i kept the front bowl sump if the CA18DET because it's easy enough to navigate round.. 11/2 set camber? What's that? I'm running about 1.75° negative camber.
colr6
What I ment it to read is 1 and half degrees neg camber you at 1.75 will be ok but if you do a lot of miles has a tendacy to scrub the inner tyre edge off quicker. You mention a 'modded ' escort front end, have you altered any of the suspension pick up points or rack mounts ? I take it your using escort struts aswell? Streetfighter
Ah I get you, my bad! Using modified Capri struts to fit Cortina inserts, adjustable Escort TCAs, compression struts with no roll bar, eccentric solid top mounts.. Modified as in the steering arms were extended by about 1/2"
Streetfighter
Also I just saw the photo I took of the readout when I got the toe angle sorted a while back. It's actually about 2°12' negative camber!

colr6
Over two degrees is a bit excessive on a road car, but if you like it like that then no probs. When he checked the steering geometry was the Ackerman checked ? Steering geometry can get very complicated with castor/camber/ kpi / toe. Get something wrong and can suffer with bump steer and the wheels at different angles especially when lock is applied.
Streetfighter
This was just a generic check so I'm certain no real angles were checked. No bump steer and when driving the steering is fantastic, it's just this weird shimmying the wheel does on lock. I don't want to break any joints. piekey
Sounds like Ackerman angle is badly out. Although these miss matched steering components steer ok in a straight line, it borders on dangerous when driving at anything more than a daudle into a roundabout. Rack drumsticks pivoting at different angle to TCA's, steering arms at incorrect lengths or angles to drumsticks etc etc This is a minefield & there are very few people amongst the wheel alignment centres that actually know what settings to use , let alone, what to look out for. MOT guys would pass it if there is no play, not realising the implications of ackerman/kpi angles all over the shop.
