Rally Day 2018 - review

Mexican Gerbil

First I must thank the brave souls who brought their OSF’s out in such wet weather.

4:30am. Time to get up, let the dog out, make a flask of tea and wait for Mrs Gerbil to get ready.

5:05am. We leave Home in the dry and make our way to get fuel. Once topped up with 99ron, we headed for Bristol to met Henry

7:15am. Met Henry and his Mk3 Tina in the pooring rain. He collected his slam panel and we carried on towards Combe. I would of taken a photo but I was breaking my neck for a wazz and it’s was peeing it down.

8:05am. Arrived at Combe, rain had eased a little. Parked up on the stand, flag up, took some pics and headed off for a wonder.

Around 9 ish all members where on the stand. We were right in the middle of RS club land, with different areas of the country in their own little plots. Although I was glad we were surronded by fords mainly and not japs fest which were in the other field.

Next to us were the clubman groups, individuals with their rally spec cars, some nice Escorts parked up. One chap brought a massive gaezzebo and his 2 daughters to help put it up. He wasn’t getting to far with it so we took pity and helped him out.

Next we wondered over the bridge into the main paddock area. This was where the Anniversary stands were along with star cars and other clubs. Sadly I missed a whole row of star cars so apologies for no pics of them. A few traders dotted around and snack huts.

After was the japs fest area which also included a few ford clubs (so glad we weren’t in that lot). Up Avon rise and into quarry corner where one chap had his stall of ford merchandise drenched with the rain. Sad really. Wonder how he’s dried them out...? Anyway..

There was plenty of track action including an oil spill and a BMW tacking it’s front off after going straight on at camp corner.

It was time for us to take Top Banana to the track for the Anniversary parade lap. I got to the front hoping OSF could get some healthy publicity out of it. I was a little disappointed as I’ve viewed footage on YouTube and the Chevette club mixed up with the Escort club. Was hoping for some sort of formation to it all but never mind.

Back on the stand and time to spectate the clubman and star car action. But as someone pointed out, there were no star drivers, no WRC cars either but hey, we like it OldSkool. I did a bit of film work before my battery died and then used Mrs Gerbils camera phone, with not so good results (see YouTube link below). By this time it was wet, proper wet. At times the rain eased but it was constant from about mid day onwards.

3:00pm. Headed back to the stand and supprised to see only 1 car had left. Even more supprised to see most of the Plastic fantastic had left. Had a cup of tea. Stood by the track watching the cars go past when Mrs Gerbil starts laughing at the blue MK2 zooming past. It’s noise up and arse down it reminded her of our Husky when she gets a case of the zoomies.....

3:30pm. I’m cold and damp and it’s time to go home. No ques as most have already left. Sad goodbyes and thanked the remaining OSF members and headed home.

To summeries, was it good? Yes the wet weather added to the sideways action, most of us would have stood in a forest stage watching rally cars go around in the wet at sometime. Hopefully someone out there with a press pass has captured Top Banana at the head of the parade showing off TOTM rally plaque and flying  the flag for OSF.

Maybe again next year....

Whether you have running car or not its a good show. Lots of static scoobies but plenty of older stuff  too.

theres only 1 scooby that im interested in, and thats the mcrae/ringer 555. other than that they dont do owt for me. 70s and 80s rally cars are my thing. but yeah it looks a great show. my mate went 2 years ago in his escort and took it round the track and loved it/

Don't think I've ever seen so many scoobies and mitsubishi's in one place!! Not for me tho....give me old skool any day.
However, this scooby stood out for me. Not noticed one with these arches before...

For me, this is one of my favourite shows and venues. Was really looking forward to this year, but if I'd took my Missus in that weather, I'd still be in the doghouse now.

Big fan of Oldskool myself, but having driven 2 Scoobys at Rally Driving Schools, I have to admit that they are amazing to drive. However, nothing beats the grin of "steer from the rear".
