Been on with the dvla today as its 6 weeks since I sent off the v5 for update.. They've now come back to say I have to fill in form v55 and a 765 to keep its original reg ! Apparently it's not on their records due to been off the road for 20yrs even though I have an original v5 So this is going to be a £55 first reg fee plus to get the car authenticated by a MG ? person. We will see what happens after that!!

You don't have to pay the £55 again if you have evidence it has been registered before in the form of an old buff log book or V5. I am surprised at them claiming it's not on their system at all though as records were centralised at the DVLA much longer ago than 20 years.

if it was never put on the system as in only on a buff book then you do have to pay the £55 fee

No you don't.

Read the exemptions clauses on the first registration fee details on the V55/5 guidance form V355/5 (attached)

Appendix A specifically states that vehicles previously registered under the old local authorities scheme (i.e. those with buff log boks) are exempt.

I do this all the time assisting members and non members alike through the V765 scheme. The problem Col may have now though is he has already sent his old V5 form off and hasn't kept a copy of it

Just spoke to them, older inactive cars take longer. Was advised to leave another three weeks before contacting again. These records must be on an old computer which is obviously slow that's why it takes longer...lol

Good luck

You still on that plane ? Should have gone in the escort, might have been quicker....lol

Yes, 7 hours from London to Doha in Qatar, 2 hour stopover in Qatar then 17 hours to Auckland. Will be over there for about 10 days. Heading over towards Australia now

tut tut, using your phone on the plane!

Yep, on the planes public wifi network (via satellite) there's no mobile signal at this altitude, amd certainly not in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

All this mumbo jumbo about phones must be in flight safe mode is complete bollocks.

Are you flying back or sailing?

We flew out to Qatar last year on an almost empty flight and had a choice of seats to ourselves. Flight back was the worst I have ever been on.

To me, this was another route into the UK other than a lorry from Calais.

My Missus caught someone going in her bag above us. Had a group in front of us lean over and took her blanket off her, until I interviened. Then when our food came, I had a guy in the opposite row ask could he have mine, as I could buy some more when we land.

I think a few people on the plane then found out how bad my tourretes can get when I'm hungry :-)

Back on topic, A lot of the records were removed in the late 80's early 90's,  ie untaxed reported scrap vehicles etc  because their rubbish computer system of the time couldn't cope.  So to free up space a lot of records were transferred to microfiche at central base Swansea. I know this because my missus worked in a DVLA local office until they closed. Sometimes it would take weeks to get info from them in these situations. I wouldn't imagine the process has speeded up any these days lol.

  • 2 months later...

Just to resurrect an old topic, the illusive v5 and the dvla!! Well after three attempts and been told it’s NOT on their system. Finally got somewhere, first attempt, contacted after six weeks....sorry not on the system. Old ones take longer wait further 3 weeks! Secont attempt after dvla said they’d not received my application.  Advise fill v55 form and another form get heritage cert plus help from owners club to authenticate the car, just hang on a minute, you’ve lost my application and v5! Then advised fill in v62 for lost log book with £25 fee. That done with nice covering letter explaining previous advise which appeared to be utter the round ones. Heard nothing contacted dvla......what application!!! So this is two applications they claim not to have received ?? Third application with another £25 and a very very rude covering letter, registered post.....Three days later, letter from dvla. Your v5 c should be with you within 5 working days!!!!!! .....I’m happy with that, but HOW can they issue a log book for a car that I’ve been told twice is NOT on their system????

So anyone chasing or applying for a log book, photocopy everything, list everything, date everything and ONLY send recorded delivery. Don’t be phobbed off, sorry not on our system. Hopefully you may get a representative who knows what there talking about and know what they are doing, which appears to be in short supply at the dvla!

On a side note anybody wanna buy a restored 71 mgbgt 49000mls chrome bumper, never been raced rallied or rolled, starts at the press of a button, faults never ironed out!....lol
