preacherman
So this year I am going to change the gearbox in the escort. It whines a bit in 2nd and 3rd and a bit stiff. Sometimes the escort feels as though it could do with another gear.it currently has a type 9 5 speed on the 1600L auto diff. Thinking of either a recon type 9 or Rx 6 speed box.has anyone here done the rx conversion as complete kits are being sold.
DT36
I've heard that 1st gear on the 6 speed is extremely low and that people pull away in 2nd. 250bhp Type 9 with taller first is good, but expect to spend close to £1k for a warranted refurbishment. Rx8 could be cheaper option, but don't know if prop needs modifying: https://m.Retards Club.com/groups/169461016471131?view=permalink&id=2036949853055562
Kenbex522
As i understand it the RX box top/6th gear isn't that much different to the 5th on a type 9 either. All you are gaining is a (currently cheaper) stronger box with an extra gear in between. Dunno exactly what diff /engine combo you are running, but I run a T9 in my Zetec Corsair with a 3.7 diff and I can sit at 70 /80 all day long and still get between 35/40 to the gallon and it doesn't sound busy at all, I dont think anyway.

RWL81P
my mates just bought this rx8 set up for his mk2 cos his type 9 was playing up all last year. he had the bot reconditioned and did 1 trackday , now 2nd and 3rd gear are shagged. personally i dont rate the gearbox company that he used. never heard a good comment about them. in fact when it was reconned and fitted in the car it had only been run for 5 minits on the axle stands and was pissing oil out. needless to say we took it off and went back to them to sort it out. then 1 trackday and its cream crackerd. so on with the rx8 box. we too have been told that the ratios are similar with 1st been a bit useless and 6th been where 5th would normally be. seems a bit pointless to me but will keep it posted how it go's with the fitting. yeah the box may be cheaper and stronger and good for road use but for track or dragstrip i think the 1st gear is a waste of time and gear changes. but will see how it go's when it's fitted. deltamal
I'm using a type 9 with my 190 brake v6 with a 3.44 crown wheel and pinion set, it's a bit buzzy on the motorway so will be changing the crown wheel setup to a 3.09 which should sort it. Snapper
V6 Type 9 is stronger and has better ratios longer 1st 2nd and 3rd standard 1:1 4th and slightly longer 5th just need a 30mm spacer and an in-line bellhousing
Ben Perry
I would of thought a rx box would fit in a auto tunnel too as my mk2 Tina tunnel only needed modding where the slave sit, since you could go cable clutch.. and you just use the front of the rx prop welded on to the ford tube

katana
21 hours ago, Snapper said: V6 Type 9 is stronger and has better ratios longer 1st 2nd and 3rd standard 1:1 4th and slightly longer 5th 5th was identical across the two types - 1 : 0.825. Agreed on the stronger input shaft bearings but that's an easy upgrade. Whilst the lower gears are a marginal improvement with 1st @ 1:3.36 a better box will come from using an aftermarket long 1st @ 1:2.95 which spaces all the gears nicely. DT36
^^^ Agreed ^^^ Got a longer first in my Type 9 since rebuild and it's definitely better.
