Pinto 2L Gearbox to 1600 Kent Xflow?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know this has probably been written about loads of times before, but im getting very confused about the information.

I have a 1600 Xflow, i would like to have a 5 speed on it, can a 2L Pinto go on it?  or is it best with a 1600 Pinto?

Ive read that both have the same ratio so it doesnt matter?? but ive also read that people have difficulty marrying the two up?? So im not sure what is what.

Dont shoot me down, but im not putting it in a Ford 🙈🙉🙊 im not worried about fixing it to the car, i just need to know what gearbox is best for my engine and what i will need to make it all work 😀 and little miss here will be a very happy bunny 😍

5 speed 1600cc and 2000cc type 9 boxes have the same diameter input shaft. 2.8i are longer shafts.
You need a 23 spline 1600cc 190mm clutch plate, ask for capri or sierra
Use your existing x flow clutch cover plate.
Use a type 9 sierra or capri thrust bearing
Use a sierra speedo
The steel bell housing should fit without touching the tunnel.
Use a quickshift lever as you will have no problem with the gearstick touching the hand brake..escort only
Use your x flow starter motor.
Use the rs single piece prop
Use the sierra sandwich plate

I did this a few times but along time ago on xflow. Did an pinto to type 9 gearbox swap today. A heavy old gearbox.

Might be worthwhile looking at chopping the top of the remote down to get the gear-lever forward, like they do on the mgb conversion.

Oh, how do they do this? That would be something i would be very interested in, i dont want my Minor to look any different, i want her to remain standard looking ideally, so with only adjust what "has" to be adjusted :-)

If you google shortening type nine, there is a pictorial guide with flicker from someone who did it for a midget. It is quite simple really. Just need someone who can alloy weld if you cant do it yourself.

My sentiments exactly. Bit of sawing bit of drilling maybe £30 to get it welded job done.

When I recently enquired about recon units I think that one was recconned and shorter tail shaft housing done properly.not a bad price for a recon box some want nearer a 1000

Hmm, i know what your saying, but ouch!!  I havent got that sort of money, well.... not for this project, i have way too many other projects seeking money too 😂

I did however find this

Type 9 Gearbox Shorten Remote

And, i think Charles Wares modifies the type 9 to fit to the 1275 A series, so i would imagine that they also cut and shut, they are only a hop, skip and jump from me, so i could get them to do the mod!  Although the cutting doesnt bother me, its the drilling that would have me in knots!!
