My MK1 Escort - advice and help please

Recommended Posts

This is my little MK1 Escort. (Mexico tribute)

Originally it was a 1300 Super, but that engine died so a 1670 X-Flow was installed. The car is not a show car and has a few bits to do so not looking to spend thousands tbh.

The exhaust is starting to give up the ghost so I was looking at this system.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hornet-Universal-Exhaust-Kit-2-Bore-and-3-Stainless-Steel-Tailpipe/121503941659?hash=item1c4a33041b:g:XbMAAOSw0vBUfDvv

Ive not measured it yet but is a standard Escort system a 2"bore?

Would this universal kit fit ok?

It looks like it could be made to fit with basic modifications.

I don't want to spend a fortune as the car is only used sunny days/weekends etc.

The chrome bumpers need re-chroming but I was looking at changing to stainless steel ones, are these worth changing to?

I didn't think The standard exhaust manifold was 2" at the tail end. If you have an aftermarket manifold then it probably is. But if you have the manifold, the mid and back boxes aren't that expensive.

As for the bumpers.... I had a pair of door handles re-chromed and that wasn't cheap. Hate too imagine what bumpers would cost. I've got stainless. Had for 4 years and no problems yet. Still shiny.

In my opinion it looks like you need to remove your old system first to see if the bends are the same and also see if all other bits in kit are going to be suitable. But think you need to know the length  of all the other parts in the kit as well. Plus it looks like it could involve lots of work and could contain more joints than needed in other words opening a can of worms. But I think that for around the same price or plus a few more pounds you should be able to find one that's more suited. But that's just my thoughts on this.

Just buy an exhaust made for an Escort-that'll be more hassle than its worth trying to fit it-even if it does fit.

Stainless ones are very good

Im interested. Are stainless bumpers very expensive? Are they available for the rear too or only fronts? The chrome on my door handles are shot too so have to rechrome them or get replacements.

They are available front and back. Also different rear ones depending on you have a cut out or not. Cheaper than chroming I would imagine.

I had a right mare getting the handles done. They got sent away and they lost the buttons, one was to bad to chrome, got a replacement which was good enough. The handles look good but only got the 1 button back. As a result I got it all heavily discounted.

About £250 for front and back in stainless

That sounds pretty good. I have trouble with the car sitting idle under an open carport the chrome on the bumpers deteriorates rapidly even though I have had them re-chromed. A decent shine on stainless would do quite nicely if I can get them all the way over here.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Stainless Steel bumpers - Thankyou for the advice about them, I will be ordering some stainless steel ones as they look great as my car sits in a car port type garage too.

Exhaust - Still unsure but thinking of trying the kit. I just need to get under the car and measure the size of exhaust required, 2" seems to sound familiar for some reason

Agreed.

You have a nice car there. It deserves better.

Unfortunately it looks better from a distance, close up it could ideally have a respray just to tidy it up, not rotten or falling apart, its a solid car overall. I would like to have it resprayed but can't find anyone local who is interested, just bodyshops that want insurance jobs in and straight out

Ireland I think but he usally shows up at AVO National day at Hatton

I tried the website but no reply as its a few years out of date, although I bought a set from eBay and ironically it is from Neil anyway, £375 for from and rear stainless steel bumpers which I thought was a fair price

hockley enterprises in southend on sea re chrome the bumpers for £140 each and mine look fantastic, I tried the rear bumper from neil fletcher and had to return it as the holes were in the wrong place, it arrived with him bent and he wouldn't refund, dam TNT

re exhaust, if you want cheap, try a sportex system, yes you will need their manifold, PM Jerrytom, I believe he has a nearly new sportex system for sale

In the end I bought the exhaust I was looking at, at that money I thought it was worth a try.

The section to go over the axle was fine, everything fitted without any cutting or modifying. I have one long section spare, 4 angle sections spare and 3 joint sections spare.

I just need to raise the rear silencer up (bracket ordered) and cut the length back as it sticks out a little to far, otherwise really pleased with it, and the new stainless bumper was a perfect fit too.

My car isn't a show car but overall I am happy with how it is slowly coming along as a presentable classic
