22mm Front Stabilizer Bar Bushes

Recommended Posts

Hi, Does anyone still make proper rubber 22mm front bar bushes for Escorts? The last set of Superflex ones being nylon had a split in them but they put the split in the side of the bush not the bottom and basically in 12 months they have distorted at the split you can stick your small finger tip in the gap. Very poor design. At least with the split at the bottom the bracket would prevent the bush from spreading. I'm just over squeaky poly bushes and just want traditional rubber ones like Ford used to make. Anyone know of a seller?

Aren't they just polyurethane but black?

Yes they too are poly bushes unfortunately but I need a fall back position if I cant get rubber ones any more. They say they are more pliable for road use than the average poly bush of old and black so they don't look odd on classics. They don't appear to have a split in them either which suggests they are a bit more compliant as they need to be if you want to get them around the bends of the bar to fit them.

My orange urethane ones weren't split either but there was no f**k'n way they were going to slide round the bar bends! I sliced the flat section as I figured that clamped flat and bar movement was lightly to be longitudinal (front / back). For the mileage I plan to do, it will be more than adequate!

Yeah I suspect the heritage ones are going to need splitting as well that's why I was just enquiring about them just in case. The Superflex ones I bought have the split on the side and when installed the split was just put to the front for no particular reason so when the car dives and pushes forward its distorting the bush apart at the split. Im beginning to notice creeks and groans and the handling dynamic is all strange now.

will look in my box tomorrow, but not sure I have 22s,i know I had a pair the wrong size for my car

as an aside, I know its the other end, but I just changed the rear ARB bushes on Alvin (nicks car), it had polys with a split at the bottom, when I fitted the polys I had noticed they allowed back and forth play because of the split, but that's all we could get at the time, ive just put gen ford rubber on, without the split, and had to re adjust the bar ends by over half an inch where theres no play

I hate poly

Poly are rubbish

Im glad Im not the only one I was expecting some blowback from the poly enthusiasts but I really dislike them. Because of the spit on the ones I have the cars handling is abysmal. One side is opening up more then the other and the car even pulls to one side. I know that if the split was on the base this probably wouldn't happen as much but I even then I found them unforgiving and prone to elongating in the past. I stocked up on most Ford bushes but there are none of these in my box of goodies, I suspect I simply used up all I had as they seem to be the most readily worn bushes on the car. Im not even holding out for Ford ones (although that would be nice) but any rubber ones would do. There seems to be a few 20mm ones out there but none in 22mm for the original RS/RP bars. I remember buying a set of harder Rally Sport ones from a RS dealer in the UK many years ago and they were terrific.

Thanks for looking out guys. If anyone sees them grab them!

Luck I think! Probably should keep them for my other mk1 rs2000 but it will be a long time before that gets done! Haha

soon as he gets back to me I’ll let you know

I was going to ask what cars use 22mm front bars there? I didnt think any Mk1s used them though.

Mk1 rs2000 heavier engine than the mex

That's interesting. I wonder why they aren't readily available then in rubber given that there are enough Mk1 RS2000s about that would need them. I was beginning to think this 22mm was some strange size unique to our Rally Packs and Mk2 RS2000s

Wow thats awesome! Are you sure you are able to part with them though? You mentioned earlier possibly needed them for yourself? If you are sure though let me know how much you would like for them? Many thanks

Fortunately a kind member found me a set of original rubber bushes that I hope will last the next 20 years which was a awesome find and thanks to him for parting with them. I also thought I would mention I got my first opportunity to see a set of Powerflex Heritage bushes at a local speed shop. They could easily pass for rubber ones in their look and are a bit more flexible that other poly bushes that I have seen in the past. They were properly molded after the original design too rather than a flat generic shape you get with some of he cheaper poly bushes. My joy having found a local stockist then took a bit of a dive as the ones I saw were 20mm and I asked if they stocked 22mm ones and they told me that Escorts only take 20mm bushes and that I must have an aftermarket bar on mine suggesting It would be better to change the bar to a 20mm one as original is best. I am definitely going to have to make my new Ford ones last. I may take them in to the store though before I fit them and ask again if they have bushes like them! However those in the UK and stockists who arent idiots, I think if you cant find rubber ones the Powerflex Heritage are a very good compromise.
