Fed Up with Electrics

Recommended Posts

Ok, I've wired cars and bikes before so this isn't my first gig, but this one is trying my patience BIG TIME! Because the original loom was largely shot to bits I got a new loom made for the car that was supposed to allow for a standalone ECU with separate loom, two fuel pumps (LP and HP for efi) and on 1st impression the loom looked good / well made but once I got into it, it's not so! I have been given a wiring schedule with wire colours and what it serves, unfortunately the actual loom colours don't necessarily tie up! I've spent the past two weeks fitting the loom as best as I can and today was the first time the battery has sat in the tray for about 4 years and was collected up - result! no smoke or fire LOL! but not much else either! I've a working starter (engine doesn't sound healthy when turned over so that's something else to look at!) and direction indicators - and that is it!

Whilst i'm ok using relays for high current draw, this guy has taken it to the next level. The wiring schedule called for 7 relays but there are 11 physically in the loom!!! and that excludes 2 in a sub loom one for each inner RS spot light! I've added 3 more - ecu clean fused power, ecu controlled EFI HP fuel pump and my 'mini sun' 55w reversing lamp. With so many relay controlled circuits, I don't know what is controlling what, or if the likely fault is the low amp switch circuit or the high amp power circuit. To my mind nothing draws much more than 17A individually so pretty much all the relays could have been done away with by using one gauge heavier wire giving a simplified loom . . . . battery - ign sw. - fuse - switch - device................just like Ford intended.

I am either going to rip the whole thing out and start again and simplify it, Forget about it and sell the car as a project or break it for spares! Choices, Choices!

I am so glad my cars still have their original looms intact. I have yet to hear of a successful and straight forward replacement. Always extreme heartache.

I don't drink but I passed a bottle shop today selling this Vodka for 5 quid a bottle. I figured at that price and Lenin on the label wasn't a good sign and its total rot gut but maybe I should keep it on hand when I need to turn to drink after an Escort repair session like your experiencing. Your welcome to a bottle?

Sparks are one of those things, if your not doing them all day it’s hard work. To make things worse it appears you have a generic loom ! As you’ve said before your unable to tie things up to normal escort which complicates matters even more. To throw even more complication into the scenario relays which could be switched feed or switched earths who knows. I’ve 11 relays in my Tina for anything that draws good power, mainly to save the old original switching. I made my loom as near to the cortina colours as poss to enable in the future any faults hopefully could be traced. My loom may not be the tidiest but at least you can trace stuff with some confidence. From my point of view it’s very easy to understand your frustration, been there done that got the tee shirt. Just keep plugging away and you will get there. HOPEFULLY!!

pointless me giving you words of wisdom I confuse myself at times so no point trying to explain to someone else ....Sorry.

PS. ....The vodka looks a good idea,.....and I don’t even drink. But sparks to drive me to it...lol

And eventually it takes the fun out of driving

So you seek addiction help from others on OSF

It helps while your online but at the end of the day it's back to the bottle again.

Ok - 'nother day - clearer picture. Checked some more stuff - reverse lights inc. Mini Sun NS - no OS yes - its a straight connecting wire ! How can it not work? Took the lamp body apart and it works when jumpered so very odd! I have an ign. warning light - yeh! but no other dash lights as I don't have actual lights either! My headlights do work main and dip if the relays get power - but they don't. Horn relay clicks but doesn't beep the beeper! Trying to work out what to do so stripped the old original loom to see what was salvageable which is about 50% - I think i'm going to go back to the Ford ceramic fuses as the box mounts better and seals + I have the Ford plugs to wire to, i'm currently checking the wire colours to the original Ford stalk controls against a Ford wire diagram and I think i've found the intermittent wiper relay - it's this Red one in the picture (before the replacement loom was installed) but it seems to be fubar ie. it does nothing when powered - anyone with a known good spare? Wipers do function with two speeds although don't park - need to check loose connectors on right terminals !

So, presently i'm not - 1. pouring petrol over it & burning it, 2. Breaking it or 3. Selling it.............................. but that is today - tomorrow may be different!
