Other Classics We Own / Owned or Admire

Rally Pack 2000

Recommended Posts

It took some finding, every car I looked at was described as excellent, mint, beautiful etc. In fact the upholstery looked like it had been trimmed by Edward Scissorhands after a night on the beer, or a CSI crime scene, a £10 hookers bed sheets, or smelt like a dead badger had been kept under the back seat. I have actually put my fingers through one cars sill (12month MOT). I paid over the odds for a low miler with full service history but I'm not sure if I've gelled with it, I wanted wind in my hair motoring, and I'm bald as a coot and just shy of 6'6" tall, so it might be going after two years of ownership.

Hopefully picking this up next week-belonged to a good longtime friend of mine who sadly took his own life recently. He'd had the car probably 25 years-they were joined at the hip-he loved it. After his funeral i wanted to enquire about the car-but didnt know how to go about it without upsetting his girlfriend or seeming like a vulture. A couple of weeks ago i was browsing eBay as you do late one night and saw the car for sale on there through a friend. I asked if my mates girlfriend would mind if i tried to buy it to keep as a memento-i would have been sad to see it leave the county for someone to mod etc. and be lost forever. She was happy to let me have it and gave me a while to try and get some cash together-she said it's not really about the money it was nice it was going to one of his friends-but a deal was struck and i'm going to see her next week. It will go into storage for a while-it needs a little welding and a bit of tinkering-its had a motor swap to a 2litre Passat engine i believe-maybe someone who knows vws could shed some light? I'll probably end up selling my Escort and doing this GTi a bit of justice it deserves. Early 'mk2 '84, i remember when he used to go the local vw dealers for bits and he'd quote the chassis number or reg number-and get either mk1 or mk2 parts as it was right on the crossover between the 2.

RIP Kiv miss you.

Hope you're staying safe @Rally Pack 2000. Truly terrible times for rural NSW.

Have a great Christmas everyone.

Merry Christmas to you too.

Yes terrible times thousands of homes lost and a red sun every day. No water and farms being destroyed and wildlife colonies wiped out and fireman and people killed.  Ive been putting extra seed out for the birds that come past black with soot and starving. All the while the Prime Minister secretly took off on holidays to Hawaii and is posing for selfies pulling teenage hand gestures. Disgraceful clown he is.

Are you sticking around Nudger or are you able to spend time in the UK with family?

Yes we're staying put here. There's been some bad smoke days down here but it's nothing compared to what some people are going through. As you say, devastating for the wildlife too. Mad to think that a lot of these have been started deliberately. What goes through people's minds?

Stay safe.

That's a shame you may have gotten a bit of air relief back in the UK.

The media likes to sensationalise about people always starting the fires to get the public worked up but the reality is only a few are started by vandals. The biggest ones have been started by lightning strikes and others by poorly managed backburns. Every fire announcement they like to say Police are investigating that the fires were deliberately lit before even working out the true cause. You definitely get the odd silly idiot lighting them but its not as bad as the media makes out. Some say that its done to try divert attention from Climate change that's drying out the continent with people thinking we would never have problem fires if people didn't start them, helping people ignore the underlying cause. I do remember a few years back houses in Sutherland were destroyed by a fire started by the Water Board welding pipes and they tried to keep it secret and blame vandals.

Anyways you stay safe too. On those really smoky days dont breath it in and stay inside if you can. We used to laugh at air purifiers as a bit of a gimmick but now you cant find one for sale on the shelves! I bet there are quite a few of them delivered by Santa this year.

You will, just monitor the winds and there will be a few hours reprieve on the day im sure. That's how I plan each day to take the dog for a walk. You cant schedule it so If I see more than a kilometre its hastily on with the collar and lead and we're off!

RP I think you should move this separate chat to its own heading,

it’s terrible what’s happening over there 👍

The fires or the Christmas Beach Bikini Babes? LOL Thanks but now that you mention it its probably not the best chat when its a happy holiday time. I will make a note to try avoid talking about it at all as it goes a bit far off topic and just depresses everyone else!

Always had a soft spot for these too, and this one seems a lot of car for £2.5k. What does that buy you Ford wise now, a box of rust?

I have only ever heard the Scimitar mention here and there on the forum, can you tell me a bit more about them? They certainly look pretty good, they have Jenson Interceptor look about them.

Made by Reliant (of 3 wheeler fame) and have a steel chassis and fibre glass body with Ford mechanicals and running gear. Early ones came with a 3.0 V6 essex engine but later ones swapped to the 2.8 Cologne engine.

There was a convertible option too.

Oh and Princess Anne owned one usually gets mentioned whenever the Scimitar is mentioned too.

Yeah the Robin is the only Reliant I know and thats only because Top Gear use to roll one every other episode. I though the engine in your pic looked familiar! Thats some solid mechanicals then. Ahhhhhh So thats why I always hear her name when I hear Scimitar mentioned! For a while I thought it was the name of some Royal Residence or castle that she lived in! Like Sandringham LOL. I actually prefer the hardtop.
