Jerrytom161
Had a problem with my indicator stalk recently as regards to an internal moving contact getting stuck on and causing an overload on my main beam/ flash circuit on the indicator stalk on my mk1 Mexico . I have since found a spare unit and changed it . I have been reading up on the internet and trying to find out what is the best form of lubrication ( if any) to use in electrical contacts within a switch . It seems to be very unclear whether anything is used or not .some people are saying use a form of electrical contact grease and some saying no as it causes build up of grit / debris and causes arcing in the contacts resulting in Burning / melting together ( which is what happenend to mine ) If anyone can help on this it would be much appreciated . katana
Why would anyone grease their switch contacts? Generally car interiors are a pretty clean place and switch moving parts can get away with the barest minimum of oil or grease on pivots. A failed switch ain't too bad after maybe 40 years service! Stuck contacts are generally through arcing caused by passing to much current ie. multiple lights without using power relay. Older Ford looms do tend to run high currents through their switches as witnessed by the wire gauge used - designed to fail unfortunately LOL! notenoughtime
I seem to remember seeing a small amount of grease on these parts when I’ve removed them, with loads of dust etc stuck on maybe they should be cleaned and re greased every couple of years to give an even better life
