Ain't it shite when that happens....
Not too much damage with such a low speed shunt I hope. Would still piss me right off....emoji34.png

Its bent the bumper and pushed the right bumper mounting in that it would need to be pushed or hammered out again. The rear apron was just painted so that paint will be ruined once they start smacking the bumper mounting point forwards. Just this week I finished the sills off in matt back including the rear corner. Once they start painting that in white again that new black sill and bottom of the wheel well will be speckled in white again so back to square one on that. Its the days and weeks of running around that you never get reimbursed for that really bugs me. They may cover the damage costs but not the time someone else has to take to pick me up when I leave the car at the panel beaters and the fact I have to pay for the paint myself as its a unique mix that I supply to the panel beaters. Its days of running round that your never compensated for.

Thats a real shame.

Looks to be a pretty clean cut incident though.

Any chance the person that hit your car could blame you or fight it or have they accepted responsibility?

She has accepted total responsibility, which is something. I was virtually stationary so she really couldn't claim I stopped suddenly. Its the uncertainty of how it will all be fixed. It needs new bumper brackets and replacement black bumper bolts which can only come from the UK. I wont find a replacement bumper so they are going to have to fix the one that's on it. But with the smaller parts how would a local panel beater even know where to get them? If I buy them and supply them I wont be reimbursed. I  wouldn't trust their insurance company to pay later with me putting the money up front. So too I have to supply the paint so it matches the rest as the rear was only just painted. These things will end up costing me and no way to be billable to them as the insurance company will only pay the panel beater directly. It seems alot to expect the panel beaters to stump up money and purchase these things from the UK themselves. Im kind of in the dark how it would all work not having had the need to deal with insurance companies before.

That’s a bit of bummer RP, you answered one of my first questions. Was it a doris !!! Get it done cash that’s my advice, work out the full cost and approach the daft cow. Explain that through insurance it would take months for them to locate parts and you want it back right ASAP !

My first thought also - unfortunately LOL!

Surely your insurance works the same as ours ie. the vehicle shall be reinstated to a condition that it was before the incident inclusive of parts and labour and be paid for by the offending parties insurance. The body shop shall quote or an assessor will compile the value of loss - this is where classic cars are a problem - you can't get the parts or they are extraordinarily expensive and so the insurance co will try to right off the vehicle and offer a cash settlement which tend to be piss poor! Start getting your evidence of parts availability and costs inclusive of carriage as you should not be out of pocket for someone else's mistake + if this is your 'daily' then claim for a hire car whilst yours is repaired. As a biker i've had insurers of people that have caused collisions, try to piss me around - i've taken two of them to Small Claims court - and won! It can be a fight but it can work out, just don't give in or accept first offer!

It was a young girl on her provisional license actually not paying attention when leaving the car park. I just switched over to a Classic car insurance a few months ago so they cant write the car off as the damage is only a fraction of that. The fact is that policy is only a few months old I dont want to get them involved if possible. Sure its someone else's fault but that doesn't stop them from increasing my premiums for some perceived increased risk. I have a claim number from their insurance company which I thought is strange before I have even taken the car to a panel beaters, She is claiming its only bit of paint on the bumper that is all that's needed but the rear panel has been pushed in at the bumper brackets so they are going to get a bill shock. New original bumper mounts are 150 quid alone. You cant get new Mk2 Black bumpers at all so they are going to have to straighten the old one and powder coat it or something. Just with the parts situation it just means months of waiting and hassles that I didn't want. Its sort of like your winters, where you spend most of the year in a garage fixing it and for those few months you want to drive it and enjoy it before you have to put it away again. While I dont have the winter problem it does spend most of its life me waiting for parts or painting this or that and this past week I have just got it to the point where I can have my few months of use and thats been taken away from me this year. She knows I was angry, her husband rang last night to speak to me but I couldn't make him understand (alot due to a language barrier) that you don't get replacement parts from the local shop and it will take months to get this sorted. He had no conception of what it takes to maintain and older classic car. He feels the insurance company knows where the parts are. Rubbish!! They dont have a clue.

Hopefully you get some one at the insurance company with a bit of knowledge of the situation

at least the car is drivable and no reason why they couldn’t pay you up front and let you sort it in your own time

Get the insurance company to try and find the parts to show them how hard it is-its not a generic Jap import!

You guys probably don't realise how really lucky you are when it comes to the overall infrastructure and support for your classic cars. While I have classic car insurance that's really just a fancy title because if I didn't do that their computers would devalue any car over 20 years old to a thousand quid automatically. They really have no idea what they are insuring as such. One example is the fact that I couldn't get my car insured as a Rally Pack as their data base doesn't have it listed I have had to have it listed as an RS2000 and no matter how hard I tried they couldn't understand the difference so that's what its insured as. How they operate is that they play up this system as where you choose your own repairer. One you trust etc. all propaganda really. What that's really about is you find the best repairer yourself so we don't have to have any knowledge or expertise in that particular car. For me the guy I'm using doesn't know much about Escorts either he is more a VW person and is relying on me to source most of the parts for him. I chose him previously as he was close to the trimmers that put the new headlining in and got him to do the winder surrounds when the windows came out and he was within a little over an hours walking distance of my home as I cant be assured to have someone to give me a lift when its scheduled to go there. He is already baulking though with some of the prices. Its unlikely they will buy a new bumper for example. But I'm pushing back on that to see the repair bare metal before painting. If they put any filler in and around the mounting that will crack within months. What's upsetting is that its not my fault, they have admitted liability, my insurance company will get all the money back from the other insurance company yet they seem to be trying to get them a better deal than for me. Everyone is so flippant about the time I loose chasing around for everything let alone the months waiting to get the parts together and the many hours I have to spend going to and fro to ensure its all done right. Like the walking there and back for over an hour each way in our summer sun doesn't even factor in anywhere. Its like I have to automatically forfeit a whole heap of time and money, set my restoration back months and be happy about it and that its no big deal!

If I had access to professionals and quality workmanship like that of Col, Ray or Notenoughtime who understand those tiny details and not look at me as some kind of pedantic obsessive freak I would be over the moon! Here I just get blank faces and "that's good enough".

Hopefully it sounds like the vw Guy has good knowledge of old cars ie rust lol don’t take that the wrong way!! 😂 that’s what us English people have to suffer

find some bits on eBay and send the insurance some costings

I actually did a printout for an Ebay page from Escort-Tec who has a new rear bumper for sale and dropped it off today. He said he would rather bash at the old one and hope for the best than get a new one..

An insurer that uses used parts to repair a claim? WTF???

I had to repair a bay window camper a few years ago

they said I should use a new panel but at the time the panel was less than desirable and fit was terrible I did manage to repair the original panel with minimal filler to make it good the insurer was happy with the repair and was checked

i believe in  that situation it was better to keep the original metal in the vehicle without disturbing many original seams that could potentially promote rust in the future

I thought about his reasoning behind it and if he goes to all the trouble of getting a replacement from the UK he gets virtually nothing for his efforts and just bills them for costs parts whereas if he spends a couple of hours  bashing he has a billable fee for his time of a couple of hundred dollars.

The one Darran has for sale is a new replica one in a box BUT absolutely our insurers encourage them to use second hand parts to keep the costs down.
But surely.....it's your car and you want it put back as best you can.
If new parts are available then that's what you want!!??
Good used but only if new not available...

Absolutely! I think the new bar from Escort Tec is the best option but they just prefer to fix the old one. (Although Im not sure these after-market bars are decent quality or not?)

Just to add balance to the argument I will mention that our insurance prices are a fraction of yours but the end result is that costs are cut. But my confusion is why is my Insurance company aiding the insurance comply of the doris who ran into me by driving the price down with a cheaper job? I just don't get it?

One positive is that I hadn't put the overriders on yet. They are as rare as hens teeth. I have a set but one is split and then I got a spare one but its a different design to all the others LOL So I left them off till I could find a 4th one. I was going to post at some stage for a swap in case someone was in the reverse position and needed one like the odd overrider I have.

But surely these replacement parts are still way cheaper than if a new car was hit? If the car body shop is seemingly allowed to make money from the accident surely you should be allowed to make your car as good again-at the end of the day her insurance is paying for it right-so it should be going on parts to put your car right not his labour fees jesus.

You would think so yes. Its just he has direct access to the insurance assessor and some unforeseen agreement with them that Im not privy too so they work things out between themselves. For all I know the body shop (my apologies we always call them panel beaters and have been using that term forgetting you guys probably don't) is working on the best deal for himself. It all seems rather rigged to me..
