Bavman
Hello I haven’t been on here for years and I know this is the best place for help and advice. I have a 2.0 zetec mk1 Escort that’s all done and runs fine ( standard engine on Weber’s). I have also got a very nice focus st that don’t seem to want to sell on eBay. So I was after advice/ opinions as I was thinking of pulling out the st engine and using it my mk1. I know it means a complete rebuild and design. Just want to know peoples opinions on it before I start to find all the bits to covert it. Or would it be cheaper just to buy a tuned zetec engine and stay with what I have got. Thanks Russ
katana
If it was me, i'd be doing the transplant and using the ST with injection and a standalone cam controller. Its a stronger engine, more powerful and tractable than a carb equipt std. Blacktop. Your existing engine if sold complete could fund the conversion making it virtually free. Why pay extra money to achieve a similar result with less tractability?
Bavman
Thanks for your reply. I do like the idea of the st set up. Just have to work it the cost and availability on all the parts required

notenoughtime
I’ve gone for some throttle bodies on my ST engine, I’ve yet to get it in the car yet though

I was thinking of the ford 5 cylinder (Volvo) just wanted to know what gear boxes and clutch - ecu and if all the fab work with pipe work would be worth all
notenoughtime
Ah you didn’t say the 5 cylinder lol think you can use the 940 gearbox
katana
That is not a common swap so lack of off the shelf parts - unless you make them - is going to be very spendy! Will a 5 potter Volvo even fit in an Escort bay?
mpdevelopments.uk
5 pot volvo lump would need major bulkhead mods. I would think. I'm using st lump with mazda rx8 gearbox. Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Bavman
Maybe not best idea then to strip a good focus st then. I will just sell it and keep an eye out for a quicker engine for the escort.
katana
I'm confused - I thought ST's were / are 4 pot Duratech equipped. How did we get into using a 5 pot Volvo engine and converting that to RWD. I do like the sound of a 5 cylinder engine though - maybe from the 4 ringed cars of the 80's! Bavman
The focus st 225 is a 5 cylinder Volvo engine
Bavman
Just thought 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo would make the car a bit more fun. And I didn’t know if anyone has done it before in a mk1. I think finding a manual box and other parts might be a bigger job then I first thought
notenoughtime
An engine with a great deal of torque especially once it’s mapped but not a real revvy engine like the zetec
mpdevelopments.uk
Lots of mods needed to engine bay to get it to fit. Much better to stick to 4 pot engineSent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk

DT36
2.5 Volvo lump is also used in the Mk2 Focus RS. I've been in one at 410bhp and it was like being in a daily until the dap went down. Then it went berserk. Very tuneable tried and tested engine, but like already said, would need some serious fettling.

Bavman
Thanks gents for all your input. My mk1 is running a zetec blacktop on 45 Weber’s. If I went for a st170 lump. Am I right thinking that exhaust and inlet are completely different.
katana
There are likely to be detail differences between a B/Top and an ST due to the power output, but the exh. and inlet are interchangeable as regards fit.
