I have been after a mk2 for some time, I wanted a Mexico but I have spent too much money on my other mk1 and have too many other projects, I have to be realistic and have settled for buying a project, its in a bad state, thought if I put a post up it may be of some help to others who are doing a similar thing, the scene around my area seems to be a bit dead, its good to share ideas and get advice too as projects evolve. You may remember this car from ebay, I wanted a two door with no sunroof, having spoke to the seller and arranging delivery I paid the dosh and waited for it to turn up.

Delivery on the 27th December 2019, Happy Christmas😀😀😀

Gutted to find out the car had a sunroof that has been very badly hidden under a load of lifting filler, I knew the car was rough, I like a challenge, was hoping the roof was ok though, oh well never mind.

Unusual taste in interior 🤔 exhaust manifold looks somewhat long. Haven’t decided on what the rad is out of yet but thinking along the lines of HB viva ?

I like the rad, found it has a big hole in, but I want to get it repaired, no idea what it has came from, along way till this stage though😁 the exhaust manifold looks home made, its burnt the wiring loom that it was rubbing against, I will need a new interior🤮🤮🤮

This is where i'm at at the moment, cut the roof off, cleaned up metal work that I wont be able to get to with new roof skin on, etch primed, found some old 2k red and painted it to hopefully stop corrosion, then covered the weldable surfaces with copper weld through primer ready for fitting.

I’m just cutting a shell up if you need a gear lever hole piece? What axle did it have in it? I’m taking it’s a s/ African car ?

Yes SA car, its got a rubbish axle in (kholn?) will be looking for a replacement setup when funds allow, brought a tunnel already with some missing brackets, but thank you very much for the offer😀

I’ve got English axle complete with 9” brakes, interior a tatty 3 spoke s/ wheel dash top with two small splits. If you go from the s/ a fuel tank you will need to reduce the size of the filler hole as the uk necks are smaller in fixing diameter.

Could be interested later when I have done more to the shell, I have brought filler hole piece I think? It was hard to find one for sale.

It won't be a Kohln axle from SA,, it'll be a Borg Warner axle I'd have thought. There's nothing wrong with them just hard to find bits for here.

Have you got it UK registered yet? It's usually best to tackle that before you invest a lot of time stripping and restoring it....................but it looks like you've already gone too far for that?

Definitely a better base to start with than most mk2s

Have the floor pans been changed I could really see? Are you keeping it standard if not what are your plans?

The floors have been bodged quite a bit, covered in textured gunk to hide sins, will be cutting them about to make solid. I like that Mexico you have😎😎😎, my plans are to run a pinto with a 5 speed and use it as a fun car, it was originally venetian red so I am painting it as it was.

I think you are right about the axle. Found a few photos of it removed.

I phoned the DVLA who told me that I need to MOT the car to apply for a V5, also the company I brought it from said they will help me register it, I was hoping this would be easy to do.

You had your work cut out with that! Lol

cant beat a murex welder, I had one for about 15 years which I bought second hand, the best £150 I’ve ever spent on a welder, and sold it for £120

I loved my Murex welder, done me proud for around ten years, built to last.

Cool,

Body panels are not easy to get here in SA, thus a lot of people resort to cutting up really clean 4 doors to build up 2 doors.

Now even the 4 doors are drying up, and everyone is worth saving ,

Yep not a perfect panel, but pretty much all that is available, had to grind down my spot welder tips to fit in the channel

Bit of a update, have not had as much time as I would of liked to get this done, really busy at work over lock down, even thought of selling the other escort Mexico. This is not to be a show car, but I just want it solid and tidy for my wife to hoon around in, painted underneath to stop rust, will have to touch up a bit of this when I weld a bit from the top.

Dont suppose you caught a photo of the second vin plate that was paint coloured. I would like to see what they call that particular green. (For my Data Base) thanks

Added note - I just looked back through your images the secondary plate may be missing?

Green was not the original colour, it was venetian red, hence going back to being red🙂
