Finally got an oldish Escort

Hi Folks,

Thanks for letting me join the group :-) I had a number of Escorts when I was younger(much younger), and sold them for peanuts. To give you an idea how long ago it was, I had a 1972 Mexico in diamond white, immaculate, bilsteins all round, sold it for £650😭😭😭.

Had a couple of mk2s as well, including an RS2000, all sold for silly prices😭

Anyway, I've been looking for another one for about a year, Mk2 as Mk1s are really silly money or heaps of rust, and eventually got a Mk2 1976 estate rolling shell, solid, but still needs some work. Hoping to put an ST170 engine in it which I've had for a while, and currently beefing up the running gear to suit. I'll probably be begging for loads of advice from you folks.

Thanks guys :-)

Yes Mex, was lucky really, it's had new wings, and it seems to have a balance bar setup on the brakes with a new pedal box and an adjuster on the dash. He's lowered thee back as well, but I want higher if anything, so I've taken out the blocks to put it back  to standard and we'll see how that goes. Paint looks OK from a distance, but I'm not too bothered about that.

I'll pt some more pictures on here when I really get into it.

Nice project-come on RP can't you tell they are proper RS alloys and not Lasers?

I can most times depending on the angle of the photo its more some of the JBW wheels these days that I cant tell for sure if the Ford symbol is filled with paint.  I have never seen a RS alloy or a JBW wheel in real life. I hadn't seen Capri Lasers either till I had bought a set online and it was only after having them in my hands I could see the differences when I looked at online images. Its easier for you guys when you have been looking at them for decades on real cars. Most here still think Capri Lasers are RS alloys.

Add - I just started using new specs for the computer which I sat on and Specsavers is closed temporarily because of the virus so Im squinting alot at the moment for details in pics!

Lol-you just have to look at the wheelnut surround-on the JBW's/Lasers its the same thickness as the spokes-RS its thinner. Still a lot of people over here think they have RS alloys when they aren't it's a common mistake.

See I still must be making mistakes with them as the JBWs that I have been looking at seem to have thin wheel nut surrounds like the RS ones to me! I can spot that in Lasers though. Its funny that I thought Capri lasers would be just as good when I bought them and thought people mad when the criticised them on here, but I really do get it now and hope to get a set to change them over. Some of those JBWs are really nice though. The 7in ones @dt36 bought the other week were really really sweet but after considering factors its the 6s for me. To think a Twincam owner followed me home one day offering me more than a thousand quid for my set of Lasers, I probably should have taken it now that Im after the real thing! LOL

Wow a grand for Lasers-should have bit his arm off haha.

LOL. I had just had them refurbished and painted them up myself and they were so hard to find here (Literally the only 4 spokes I had ever seen for sale locally in decades) so I didn't want to part with them out of fear never being able to get any others. The guy eventually did find another set but by the time he bought them and refurbished them they cost him $3000 AUS which is over 1500 quid. There is an untapped market here! LOL. When you live with our RP/RS alloys you can understand why we slam down the cash in desperation! Their horrible!!

Sorry Mash the conversation went off on a tangent! LOL I want your wheels

Aye, genuine article, look pretty straight and got them for just over 400 quid including the delivery, so I'm happy :-)

Trying to decide what tyres to put on them, might have to put something cheap on to start with Toyo proxies maybe.......

No worries RP :-) There's a few sets on the bay  of Es still over here, one set for about 850, including some tyres, but the  were too far away for me, so thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hang on to them :-)

PS, love the RS, is  that yours? I had an original in that colour with a black vynl roof many years ago, lovely motor, sold it for peanuts :-(

No mine is a Rally Pack not sold in the UK (what some there would call a flat nosed RS2000 rather than a Rally Sport with a droop snoot) but they both had the same alloy wheels wheels from the factory. They are in the shed now and instead has Capri Laser wheels on it.

4 Door Mexico - no sorry that's wrong due to the chrome screen trim - it's a 2.0L 4 door Ghia LOL!

I did have solid rubbers in that but when I went to change them after putting a new head lining in Burtons sent me two fronts so I hastily had to get some rubbers locally and all I could get were ones that took the chrome strip.

I suppose i'll let you have that one then - its surprising the difference a simple thing makes! I'm not a great fan of chrome but when used sparingly it's good ie. Escort 1/4 bumpers. Escorts without bumpers just look wrong to me - I obsessed about finding decent door window trims for my Cooper 'S' - hardest bit was finding the trim clips but a Cooper 'S' must have them to be 'right'
