Mk2 Rally Pack

Hi Everyone,

Just picked up my first Escort, it's been a bit of a life long dream to one day have an Orange 2 door and it's finally happened! Exact spec is a 1977 Rally Pack.

A bit of history about the vehicle. It's a two owner car and was only recently pulled out of a shed where it had been sitting in Adelaide since about 1993.

It obviously wasn't running at the time but a visit to a local classic Ford mechanic soon had this recitified, now purrs like a dream. The brake master cylinder was replaced but brakes are still extremely spongey, I'll get some new hoses and see if that fixes them up as current pedal feel doesn't fill me with much confidence.

Wheels aside, it's totally original and will be restored to maintain its factory form.

I have a few bits and pieces to track down, I'd be happy to hear of any leads on where I maybe able to find some hard to get bits..

Bits I'm looking for,

Original Volante wheels x 4 as I have the spare wheel to make up the 5th - Pretty sure these are specific to Australia only.

One bumper overrider. I know there are different types, mine has the ones with the clearly defined line around the edges.

One headlight or happy to get a pair, preferably original. I think these are Lucas branded and have a little blue H4 logo in the middle of the lense.

Finally, one spotlight or happy to buy as pair if required. Pretty sure these are Carello branded but not sure of model number or size etc.

I'll add some more pics of it when I'm next at the shed tinkering away.

Cheers,

Shane

I often question the use of the term "Barn Find" when the cars have been stored in air-conditioned underground carparks all along but this is the very definition of a true barn find. Corrugated tin shed, cobwebs, hay grass and decades of dust you can no longer see through the windows. Shes a towey too. An option for Australian Escorts.

Orange is the greatest of the Rally Pack colours followed by Yellow.

Welcome to the Forum. Please message me privately with some of the car details so I can add the car to my Rally Pack Register.

Awesome mate, i wondered where this went - cant believe scott was able to find it. Def a true barn find

Sometimes spot lights come up on ebay but finding decent condition ones is very tricky so might be best picking up average ones and piecing them together

Yep, I was very lucky to be the one to get it.. I was on it within 40mins of the pic on FB going up, deposit followed right away. The only condition I had was I wanted to see more pics, by the time the pics came that afternoon there were 12 others in the queue after me if I didn't grab it.

I'll keep an eye on ebay for the spots and other bits I'm after, thanks for the tip.. 👍

Oh and another pic from when it first seen the light of day in about 26 years.

Thanks mate 👍

I'm well aware of that thread, it's actually how I found the forum while hunting for my own missing overrider..

Its sad when my Overrider pain draws membership to here with the similarly afflicted! LOL

Do you only need the one Overrider? There appeared 2 missing in the images?

Just the one mate.

I have the one missing from the front (like brand new) it appears to have been removed to fit a CB radio antenna bracket under the driving light..

Can't say the same for the rear one, I have it too but it has succumbed to muntedness. That's the one I'm trying to replace.

Well when I find my 4th matching one I will give you first dibs on my other.

Yep sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time with these things, i was lucky like that with mine also.

Cant believe how good condition its in, luckily our weather tends to help in there storage situations. On the aussie forums i was able to pick up some mint spot lights for 100 bucks. Maybe join up there and put up a wanted thread, its more aussie based and does have some action - https://www.classic-ford.org/cfp/default.aspx

There is a "Parts Wanted" Section here so feel free to post. Neither the Carellos nor the Overriders are uniquely Australian so through here you will get access to people from UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa that may pitch in to help. The rust free C Pillars on my RP came from a very good friend I made through here in Holland he cut off his LHD Ghia. @anglia58 You certainly cant get them locally. Ford Australia used the most moisture absorbing sealant they could find to ensure every one rusts! (4 doors worse than 2 doors though) LOL

Heres a tease on the lights though.

Oh the things I would do for those lights! 😍

If you like them you may like these! While Australian Rally Packs had Lucas H4s as standard headlights to go with their Carello driving lights, however if you really are a fan of Carello lights you could even get a set of matching headlights by Carello made for Ford that fit Mk2 Escorts without the need for the usual mounting rings. Definitely rarer than their driving lights!

Looking at the lenses are those lights for RHD or LHD?

I have never seen another set for comparison but at the time I just wanted them regardless LOL

Mind you if you saw how rough and dodgily I set up my headlights you would never even notice what they were meant for!

loving this car, you ozzies had some great mk2 options

You cant see it from the angle of the shots but this car has as standard a 54 Litre drop tank under the boot floor with a rear fuel filling behind the number plate. With the UK side tank removed the boot space is vast, at the time said to be larger than most mid sized cars. So not only with its larger boot space with its larger capacity it gave you 50% greater range and placed it much lower and in the middle for improved centre of gravity and you didn't even have to worry which side of the petrol pump you drove into any more. We dont seem to be that innovative any more, everything is done overseas now!

Only issue when you slide it sideways it starves of fuel and lets you down!

Something sounds a bit off if thats been happening to you. In 35 years I have never had that happen nor any in my group from our old hoon days ever mentioned that ever occurring. And most of the time we would run in the red zone for power to weight advantages (or so we used to tell ourselves anyways LOL) Given the pickup is also located centre left to right of the tank but forward within the tank for fuel line exit, only severe braking should have such adverse effect but its naturally baffled to help reduce that again I don't ever remember the car cutting out slamming the brakes on. I think there may be pickup issues unique to your car if that's the case. Although if I had to pick a flaw with that tank arrangement its that they dent really easily.
