Scarface GTti Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Having spent 18 months restoring a big arched Twin Cam shell, we sent it to SPL for acid dipping. It came back with a dented roof, dented front wing and a bloody great crease in the door. Not to mention drilling it in the wrong place to let air out and subsequently having a big patch in the top of the rear wheelarches that isn`t treated. Not best pleased. Their answer is to knock a few quid off on the next shell we take. So having another shell to do, is there anywhere else that can do this and if so are they any good?
john_3.0s Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 bimey mate, id be asking for more than a few quid knocked off next time!
Admin Mk2Jo Posted April 3, 2008 Admin Report Posted April 3, 2008 Have you thought about having it blast treated as an alternative?
4parajon Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 Unfortunately this is'nt the first case Ive heard of this happening with this company. Apparently he uses a lot of foreign cheap labour. The only way around it is to take piccies of the car before its delivered and get them to sign the pics when you deliver it so they agree its in the condition stated. I think I would be pushing them for money off this shell, not the next one. I only found out this from investigating the process myself and reading about peoples experiences, I got mine shot blasted in the end. As far as I'm aware there's no one else in the UK that offers this service. Good luck
antz Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 demand they pay for your shell! you shouldnt put up with shoddy services.
johnny_h Posted April 3, 2008 Report Posted April 3, 2008 The front wing of my mk1 escort came back with a vertical dent/crease in it. What you must be SURE of is that it wasn't there before you took it in. It could have been a repair that the process has revealed due to filler being removed. I can't be sure if the dent was there before or not as I didn't check the inside of the wing. On the outside it looked perfect as I have pictures of it but a good repair will not show on the outside.
slidelong Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 i hate hearing a story like this ,because i've just booked my mk1 in for dipping and i won't be settling for money off
morcheen Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 the same happened to my mates lotus sunbeam shell, roof dented, rear 1/4 dented, new rear panel he just fitted dented, sill had a big slice in it,from the forklift fork i think.agree with the cheap labour, and he said the same thing about knocking off ££ on the next parts, not that one. 7 days 24 hours a day operation.he's coining it in,but not to bothered about bashing up your cars !! the e-coat sounds a good idea but when you start doing prep for minor filling work ,you will break through the coating. pity nobody else is about to do this in europe at the moment.
johnny_h Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 All you people that claim to have problems know for a fact that the dents were not there before and just repairs that were revealed when the acid has eaten the filler away? I can't be 100% so I don't feel I am justified in slating the company.
Scarface GTti Posted April 5, 2008 Author Report Posted April 5, 2008 It`s easy to be sure when you`ve fitted brand new wings and panels and alot of the shell was bare-metalled when it went. That`s a real shame that no one else does it. Definately collate evidence of how it looks before it goes!
johnny_h Posted April 5, 2008 Report Posted April 5, 2008 Lol, I doubt many people considering acid dipping would go to the trouble of bare metaling beforehand. But If new panels are fooked then thats grounds for complaint. Did your mate complain? What was the outcome?
