many people play guitar?? i'm looking at starting to learn over winter. After some tips etc and also where would be best to get a cheap but half decent guitar to learn on. Also is it best to have pro lessons or is it possible to teach yourself?

you need to be shown the basics if nothing else or you will pick up bad habits right from the start, ive taught guitar in the past , its a tough time learning and i gaurantee you will get pissed off from time to time.. but if your determined then stick at it, its a great feeling to be able to pick up a guitar (or any instrument) and play a favorite tune..

be prepared for very sore fingers on your left hand

i never learnt on an accoustic, i stilll cant handle an accoustic to this day..

if your wanting to play electric and electric only then i suggest you learn on an electric, the best 'cheapo' guitar ive come accross is a vintage les paul copy, i bought one new 10 years ago and it plays as well as my gibson les paul ever did..

this ones cheap enough at mo,

epiphone are a good play too, had half a dozen of them.

I remember that well

Oh and dont be mad like me and go out and buy a Fender Stratocaster and Amp yeah there cool but accoustic is the best for learning the trade with, electric you just amplify your own din!:lol: And your kinda forced to learn or its a waste of money and your father like mine threatens to hang you from a lamp post with the strings

could pick you up a cheap guitar from where i work

comes with amp and lead etc, little starter pack. slightly damaged for £50?

i've played for 7 years now and haven't looked back since!

i would reccomend lessons to be honest mate, saves time and, although it costs more, you are more likely to stick at playing!

practice practice practice!!!!!

I've been playing for about 10yrs! I can play most things if shown (parrot fashion) but cos I didn't have lessons I still can't play too well naturally as I never learnt any scales etc or got a basic understanding of music :? just jumped in at the deep end ... not the best way to learn!

Been playing 20 odd years :( would get a cheap electric starter set ebuyer about £60. Don't worry about plugging it in to start with cos if you're not fretting or plucking the notes/chords right you wont here it

I've been playing for about 10 years now, lessons would help you greatly.

I never took lessons properly but around a year ago I started to take lessons mainly to increase my playing speed, the guy i use/used is based in Sedgefield, he is a bit of a shread-head (but if the likes of Vai, Satriani, Yngwie, Lukather are your thing then he is definately your guy)

Maybe possibly have a mint Epiphone SG for sale, I rewired it about a year ago with decent componants only downside is the string action is quite high as I was using it mainly for slide.

i went to the local authority night classes, they were brilliant!!!!!

you get to learn with other students who can help you as you help them,

you HAVE too learn your homework by the next lesson or you get left behind,

the teachers were great , and it was cheap per term!!

the main key to it all i found is the first thing you will be taught is scales

boring as fook , but my teacher taught us 3 cords at first that way when you get bored of learning scales you can stop ,play the 3 cords and make a song , then go back to scales, a friend of mine was having private lessons same time as me, when our mates asked us to play something he could only play scales i played a beatles song with 3 cords , very satisfying!!!!!!

as for guitar try and buy the most expensive one you can afford, the cheap ones the action will be too high and it will constantly need tuning,

within 10 months i had a gibson les paul gold top, and a beaut of an epiphone acoustic

good luck and dont give up cos you,ll love it

bass!!!! :mrgreen::mrgreen:

you beat me to it!

i never learned guitar i play bass but whether you get lessons or not doesnt matter. what does is that you leaern the boring stuff.

i just learned to play asongs at first and i was crap at bass and couldnt improvise until i learned the basics to why notes fitted.

but another helpful way to learn knew sounds and techniques (specially on guitar) is to learn a range of material. look at different artists and different genres.

but yea personally dont bother learning guitar its for glory seekers and wimps play bass!

I got a epiphone les paul gold top in my collection, plays real nice. Try your local guitar shop, and see if you can pick a few up and see how they feel. A crap guitar, or a badly set up one is hard to play and will piss you off so much and make you want to give up. I bought another epiphone, an acoustic one from a mail order place. When it arrived, the strings were so high off the fretboard that you needed popeye arms to play it. Once it was set up properly it made such a huge difference and its now so easy to play.
