well, i keep thinking about getting rid of kooltina as i have no need for 4 cars, (none of which are finished).

no wage rise in 7 yrs means no money to spend on cars anymore, and i need something more economical than the cars i have, ie, a diesel!

with the money i save in fuel, i will have money to convert kooltina, killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

kool economical daily, tax exempt, very cheap insurance, and if i can get her near 50 mpg, it'd be like giving the tax dept the finger

but i know nothing about diesels, other than the endura has the tried and tested bellhousing bolt pattern.

is this a crazy idea? or common sence?

any info appreciated as this is just an idea fuelled by red wine atm!!

Go for it, Years ago Paul Burnham had a diesel 32B shop pickup which he used to drag too, and I think I saw a small pic in CC this month of a Standard 9 or somthing with a Hummer Diesel stuffed up front and a BIG GMC 671? blower sitting on top

They certainly do  I have my blue estate with a toyota turbo diesel fitted to a type 9 box.

I only drove it a short distance but it went very well !!!

Shame the head needs welding otherwise it would have been in my van by now.

I have the whole thing on ebay but most people just want the shell, so the engine may be available seperatly

ian, that extended front mk1 escort and the fester seem to be the catalist for this sort of thought pattern  , but if i can get the diesel in and running, economically, then who knows what happens after

but atm it's mpg and cost that counts! (i knew you'd understand  )

I would think the diesel from a late tdci transit could work, or a tdci from a Mundano, focus or festa, they are probably going to bolt up to either a type9 or a mazda box, its got to be sortable from the mechanical side quite easily, Electricially it could be a nightmare with the transducers imobilisers etc, might be easier to strip a whole car ans put all the electronics under the dash complete

You'd need to use a diesel or V6 box with the diesel B/H to clear the diesels thick fly wheel, i had fitted one on a petrol type 9 using a thinner fwd flywheel (escort diesel)) but couldn't get a starter to fit and engage propperly, niether could the engines prev owner with the same set up, there might well be one out there i just aint found it yet :?

the 2 flywheels side by side

All my Mk3 is doing is sitting there at the mo i still have to change the waterpump from FWD to the RWD type with it's block adapter and timimhg belt backplate or the bottom hose comes out pointing at the bulkhead on the same side as the top hose :(

The oil filter might be a problem but shorter filters are easy to get although the Mk2 position might be better or worse (it sits about 10mm above MY arb) i've yet to decide what engine mounts to use so i could raise it up some, RWD mounts sort of fit but if you can weld it'd be easy to adapt any steel pinto mounts.

If you can i'd at least get a sierra engine to rob the RWD specific bits off, mondeo and escort TD blocks are the same, i have a mondeo block with all the RWD bits on it in my P100

They can be made to look nice but are pretty heavy, id say heavyer than a pinto? i think i'll weigh me spare block and head and find out for sure.

I have 2 heads, the bloke i bought it off got me a replacement from Malta along with a new timing belt and head gasket.

However the new head looks similar to the old one !!!!

It's a 1500 Turbo diesel, sounded good and didn't smoke just pressure in the water system.

I've not done anyhting with it apart from remove from the engine, i'm sure if it was welded and planned it would be fine.

I put a pic up of the original head on my ebay ad here:

That's what i fitted instead

Not sure what it will do yet, still have to get it Mot'd but hoping it will be ok.

I can help you on the injection bits for that as well :mrgreen:

Recently bought a spare setup cos i had some problems, turns out it was nothing to do with any of the parts i'd fitted.

imo a much better choice, because if you wanna revert back to oldskool then its easy, or you could go on to turbo it, which if kept low boost would still be ok on fuel i would have thought? somming to think about on a later date?
