Lizzy Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 I'm told my Mk1 just broke a record at the MOT station, by generating a list of faults that ran to three pages! I've been stoically getting them all sorted, but I can't get hold of these 'rear shackle pin bushes' anywhere. (They're the bushes at the back of the leaf springs.) Also, the N/S brake caliper keeps seizing on, so I'm going to need to replace that too, and it's really expensive, so hoping to get a 2nd-hand one if poss? Another problem is the light switches - the headlights and side lights are on one switch (like one you'd see in the bathroom) and it just dangles down! So yeah, I need to get one of those 2-position rocking switches that actually fits into the dashboard. The previous (French) owners have also combined indicators with hazards, resulting in neither working. You go to indicate and get one puny little flash and that's shallot. I'm not even sure what I need to fix that one coz I didn't think the Mk1s had hazards, so... umm...? Oh - and wheel nuts! I borrowed some old Ford wheels off a lovely mate of mine for the MOT, with new tyres on, and got the long chrome wheel nuts with conical ends to put them on. But the holes on the wheels are too big - the wheel just waggles side-to-side, up-and-down (not in and out) so that's really weird. I think I might need some wheel nuts with a wide bit at the bottom? Like I used to have on my Rapier 20 years ago, but I don't know what they're called and not even sure exactly what they looked like. Lastly, I think my gearbox may have gone on the way home from the MOT station (I had to do the last mile in 1st and 2nd!), so my need for a Type 9 Sierra box has become more urgent! Thanks for reading. Any parts or suggestions much appreciated! Lizzy 1
Bigfish Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 Hi I have some brand new leaf spring rear shackle poly bushes for a mk1 escort in black for sale - £19.99 delivered 1
katana Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 Come on post up the pages and give us all a laugh! 3 pages is certainly going for it - surely you made some attempt to provide a worthwhile test subject? But a bathroom light ! ! ! Where the hell does it dangle from? LOL French owners - obviously French use regs re the Hazards - no......Mk1's no hazards so obviously a bodge job - strip out the redundant crap and re tape the harness.
HotRodMatt Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 My Mk1 has hazards and I'm pretty sure the Haynes manual talks about them too.
Justmark Posted February 26, 2015 Report Posted February 26, 2015 My Mk1 has hazards and I'm pretty sure the Haynes manual talks about them too. Not all mk1s had hazards although you can add them easy
Lizzy Posted February 26, 2015 Author Report Posted February 26, 2015 Thank for the advice. I wouldn't mind adding hazards, although I don't think the MOT requires them, but mainly I just need to get the parts for now.
Admin Vista Posted February 27, 2015 Admin Report Posted February 27, 2015 My Mk1 has hazards and I'm pretty sure the Haynes manual talks about them too. So does mine but early ones, such as Lizzy's, didn't Lizzy, from memory your escort is a very early one isn't it? 68 or something? If so it'll need a different head and side light switch to most of us. They're shorter and fatter and surprisingly are usually easier to find It'll look like this one shape wise, but obviously for lights instead of wipers, try a Ford autojumbler such as Goldendays (second link) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MK1-ESCORT-TWINCAM-RS-MEXICO-GENUINE-FORD-NOS-2-SPEED-WIPER-SWITCH-EARLY-TYPE-/321319115272?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ad01c9a08 http://www.goldendaysparts.co.uk/ 1
HotRodMatt Posted February 27, 2015 Report Posted February 27, 2015 Ah I see, did wonder if it was an early/late thing.
katana Posted February 27, 2015 Report Posted February 27, 2015 Mk1 with hazards..................I thought they still had the little swinging trafficators in the B pillars .......LOL!
Admin Vista Posted February 27, 2015 Admin Report Posted February 27, 2015 Mk1 with hazards..................I thought they still had the little swinging trafficators in the B pillars .......LOL! And all the style and curves that was ironed out of them by that new fangled mk2 edit, just noticed Lizzy's is a 1970 car and that was when they changed (I think) so it could have either. Lizzy, is your light switch under the dash outboard of the steering column or on the flat of the dash facing the driver outboard of the steering column?
Admin Vista Posted February 27, 2015 Admin Report Posted February 27, 2015 It's quite hard to tell from that picture whether that's an early or late switch Lizzy. Is it short and fat like this one Or is it long and narrow like this one
Lizzy Posted February 27, 2015 Author Report Posted February 27, 2015 I'll try again in daylight. It was a bit awkward just now, holding a torch in my mouth! LOL Thank you for the links you sent though - that's really helpful
Lizzy Posted February 28, 2015 Author Report Posted February 28, 2015 As you can see, I've put the loose switch in the hole but it's not attached to anything. I guess I need to get a new one like that and attach the wires that go to the switch that's dangling down? The indicator just flashes once. There's also a weird thing going on with the wipers. Maybe they're not the right wiper arms, but I got some 18" blades for them and they look like this...
PeteRS8084 Posted February 28, 2015 Report Posted February 28, 2015 Pretty sure your blades are far to big!
Lizzy Posted February 28, 2015 Author Report Posted February 28, 2015 Well yeah... I know what you mean, but there is a gap between them in the middle. If I get them loads shorter, the gap will be huge. And also, look how far the nearside end of the nearside wiper is from the edge of the screen. It would be even further away with a shorter wiper. That's why I was wondering if the arms might be wrong?
PeteRS8084 Posted February 28, 2015 Report Posted February 28, 2015 That look like mk2 arms, but I have no idea if they are different, as I have not had a mk1 for years, but my mk2 RS only has 8" blades I think. Maybe look for some other mk1 arms.............maybe? Just a though. Pete 1
Lizzy Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 I just realised, the wheels I borrowed for the MOT are like the ones on the March page of my OSF calendar. Does anyone know what wheel nuts I need? Coz the ones I bought are too narrow for the holes in the wheels! It was so disappointing...
Lizzy Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 Does this sound like a gearbox that would fit on a Mk1 Escort? - "1990 Ford p100 1.8 td gearbox removed from running truck, possible type 9" The auction ends tonight! It's just, I've been looking at T9 boxes and they're about £800, so I wondered about getting this one, maybe getting it reconditioned, if it fits?
khanlad Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 It looks huge in the pictures, is the tunnel on your car already widened? Not sure about the rubber dougnut thing at the back either?
Lizzy Posted March 1, 2015 Author Report Posted March 1, 2015 No my tunnel is standard, although I wouldn't mind getting it modified, if it costs less than buying an £800 gearbox! lol She's just an ordinary 1300cc crossflow Mk1 Escort (well, ordinary except for being a left hooker) 1

The ratios are all wrong for use coupled to a petrol engine 1
