I purchased this escort on 10/2/2020 and haven't done a lot since! It has certainly seen better days, 2 owners from new... not sure what they were doing to it! Its had a hard life and requires some serious tlc. I've never done anything like this before and only picked up a welder once which didn't go very well. I'm a cnc machinist so plan to make what i can.

Machined some door hinges and pins seeing as the others have been chopped off the car. Got hold of a boot, boot hinges/springs and bonnet hinges which i vapour blasted and painted up. Got the boot bolted up (with help) But not properly aligned.

Great progress Pooley in a short time. And learning to weld at the same time. Im still only taking old floor out.!

Was the A post that bad that it had to be removed.? Will the new sill come up to bottom of A post now.?

Yes all the a pillar post panels were scrap, they'd chopped the door hinges off for some stupid reason! I could maybe have saved the inner ones but had already bought new ones, so just swapped out the bottom half, otherwise the dash would have had to come off aswell to replace the full section! Yes mi hoping the sill meets up nicely with the A post 😂😅 Have no idea though, looks to me like the whole A Pillar needs shifting up a tad to make the door line up with the scuttle... but otherwise it looks to line up nice. The floor thats in there at the minute needs to come down on the drivers side, so i need to fix that and also all the welding thats been previously done on the front end looks too high to me! Well see when i get a bonnet for reference and sit some wings on it!

Good stuff. I have the A post to do as well after floor and front chassis leg repair but hoping it's just the outer post skin and door jam and post itself is ok. Great thread keep up the pics and so will I.

Got abit more done, got a sill on and re welded some rubbish welds. almost got the hang of it now 😂

Also picked a bonnet up from wales, you cant see it on the picture but it seems to have been lifted up more at the front, for clearance i presume 🤷‍♂️

I will tidy all the welds up once the main bits have been done.

Unfortunately pooley is my son in law 😂🤣 So has been tapping me up for parts he hasn’t got,but I told him he’s brave to take it on as lots of work and parts to find, but he’s moving along nicely 👍

What do you mean unfortunately! 🤣🤷‍♂️ Yes you’re helping me out with parts and old school wisdom! 😎

Moving along nicely, make sure the metal is as clean as possible before welding as that can make a right mess of the welds otherwise, maybe try upping the power on the mig slightly to get more penetration

Thanks, yes when I started my welder wasn’t up high enough! Think I’ve sussed it now 🤔

Trip up to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 last week to get some lovely parts from @davey ! Top bloke 👍🏼

Also re did some welding on my drivers door hinges, they were too low, now I’ve re done them and somehow they’re now too high, even had the door resting in place for reference! So this weekend i WILL sort the hinges once and for all! 💪🏼

After I fell out with the car last weekend and launched the angle grinder across the garage, I tidied up the mess, got a new blade for the angle grinder and had another re-think.

I machined another set of hinges because I’d butchered the previous ones and got the door on and in the right place now finally!

Almost got the hang of this! Almost... 😂

Sort of reinforces the fact of how bad the original cars panel work was, when seemingly good original OEM panels don't align or panel gaps can be measured with a large stick LOL! I'm not having a go at you M8 but check out the door shut / swage lines / gaps above - cars from, say, Germany were never that bad! The public did accept some crap back in the day!

I can fine tune the panel gap with a large hammer! No point until i have the wings mocked up so i can even it out

I want to know how you getting on with learning to weld Pooley? My Daisy needs a new sill & I don’t kno whether to give it a go or not?! 🤔

Just about got the hang of it now, nothing pretty but it does the job! Its easy enough to pick up, i'm using CO2 pub gas but you should really be using a CO2 and Argon mix for welding! Its literally just trial and error, just get abit of metal and have a go. If you blow a hole in it just change the setting and patch it back up!

Done a few bits, just trying to get the thing rolling to make it easier to work on as I haven’t the room for a rollover jig. Welds need grinding back and neatening up. Can get the front Suspension bolted up as soon as my track rod ends turn up.
