Stunner mate, that. I do love a big slab of 70's yank metal. Very cool indeed.....😎

I would like to know what the Yanks make their door pins out of? Those huge things are wider than a house gate and weigh just as much and Transplanters are only average compared to some of the bigger ones. Escort 2 doors sag after a while and they are nowhere near the size of the American stuff.

PS @The Transplanter That colour combo is just brilliant!

Just went car shopping at a place that has dozens of dealers all crammed on to the one site. Had 3 offers for the Mk2 in ten minutes. Was offered 30 grand cash (AUD) through the window while I was still navigating their driveway! They were like vultures!

Were you not tempted, or you still loving the OSF.....😎

Im actually more attached to my Rally Pack than I am to my Twincam (I know weird huh?). Its nice and all but the Mk2 was my every day road car I have had for over 35 years. Its been through my touring the country phase, my university days and times with friends before everyone started families and gave up their OSF so that its now the last car of my original teen/20s gang. Too many memories that money cant buy even if its total pain the ar*se at times and ridiculous parts prices of late. Mine you 30 grand AUS is only 16k Pounds Sterling for an original 2lt Rally Pack that still has its original engine when its insured value is well over twenty I think even if I wasn't attached to it I would have passed.

I get far too sentimental over my cars an struggled to part with each one, but having as much attachment to it as that, I think I'd be buried with it 🤣

I have stated exactly that on many occasions! I bought it 2 weeks into my first full time job with my very first bank loan. I cant believe they loaned me the money with such a short employment record but they rang my boss and then gave it to me so it must have been secure. Lately though with all the repressive things going down in the world I have been more contemplating my own version of that movie "The Last Chase" where they claim that all the oil has run out and then force everyone into mass transit and electric golf buggies and the star Lee Majors of the Six Million Dollar Man fame digs up his racing Porsche that he buried in his garage so they couldn't take it from him and he makes a dash in it to the free part of America. Go going out in a blaze of glory to freedom in it rather than fading away alone in a nursing home is certainly on my options list!

Its one of Fords "Grabber" colours (or should I say colors), that was offered of performance models, much like the RS colours and they were quite similar as well

Like:

Grabber Green - Modena
Grabber Blue - Monza
Grabber Orange - Vista
Grabber Yellow - Daytona
Grabber Lime - Monaco
Grabber Light Blue - Olympic

As for the hinges, they are more like a modern car hinge, not just a pin through two bits of metal like the Escorts etc. They are more robust, but they can still drop!

Same, 30 years now and counting. Would have to be in dire straights I think to consider letting go. I like the idea above of going out in a blaze of glory. Once my daughters are all fully grown up, I wonder if my death wish streak I had a young adult will return to finish me off before the dribbling begins...I fooking hope so.....😁

Having kids really makes you grow up and stop acting like a total prat.

  • 3 weeks later...

Another run out today, this time to the Bletchingley Arms near Redhill

The light blue MG had a MX5 engine and what looks like MK1 bubble arches.

The green MK1 Cortina was as original as you could get, original plastic covers on the seats and aged lovely.

Isn't that RS1800 the one that was sold recently at auction for £82k and change? Nice eclectic mix of cars there!

It was nice,  I had a good look round it and I suspect it IS a replica

, Young ish lad driving it, but still nice and good to see.

Took this pic of mine in the city centre yesterday having taken my daughter to her rugby match in it (cue dads at the match standing rounding asking questions about the Escort instead of watching their kids play 😄) astounding how small it looks in-between two bloated pseudo SUVS. Neither of which were particularly sporting or utilitarian.

How did the public get so suckered into believing such large vehicles were necessary for daily transport?

Nice pic, looks stunning. Hope your daughter had a big beaming smile on her face. :-)

With regards to how big cars are nowadays, a lot of it is down to the tech and safety features built in.  Let's say that the new Focus ST is the the current modern variant of your MK1 these days.  If you stripped out every single feature of the Focus ST and tried to put it into your MK1, it would end up being that the MK1 would now need to be built bigger to accommodate everything.

Your car is probably smaller than a current Ford Fiesta, which in it's day was the baby brother of the MK2 Escort.  I think that white car behind you is a Vauxhall Mokka.  Basically a roided up version of the Astra, which back in the day of your MK1 would have been on par with a Vauxhall Viva.

Anyway, I totally side tracked there.  NICE MK1 and I'll have that out of the 3 cars on display, thank you... :-)

Love it Scott!

I used to drive mine to Football and leave it in a public car park when I was playing, wouldn't dare do that now.

Isn't it cute - just like a real car only 2/3rds scale LOL! It looks like you could almost fit a whole Escort wheel & tyre inside the rim of the monster in front! Hasn't anyone noticed over the years that the minimum engine sizes are slowly creeping up - who does a 1.0L engine that isn't turbo'd - seems 1.6L NA is the new 'small engine' Base model, probably to haul around all the crap & 'safety features'  fitted to modern cars! I bet the Escort weighs half what the thing in front does!
