I do that to ,as a nice replacement costs £100 +

I do the same....when I remember!! Always have the locking cap in the boot.

It would be fun watching them try on later Australian Mk2s. The real filler is behind the number plate and a blanking plate that looks like a fuel cap is bolted in the original filler hole. It was certainly fun to watch in the old days when there were pump attendants to serve you. 😀
