CDs as said, easier storage

 

and DVDs becuase they where to replace VHS so they made a DVD case about the same size just thinner so people wouldnt need to buy new storage units for them (at a guess)

The deep answer is that designers realised that they fooked up when doing CD's coz they didn't fit in the same place as cassettes did hence a rival 'minidisc' was released and that is why CD's took so long to become commonplace - they were not going to make that mistake with DVD

I never realised it was an hotel?! I've always said a hotel, I guess it's to do with pronouncing the H or not
