Hi all,

If i were to modify a new car that runs on single point injection and a cat and put a new decat exhaust on there and twin carbs how would it work at mot time with both mods? Will i have to have a cat n carbs be ok or both off or both ok

advice appreciated

Many thanks

Tom

I think that it doesnt matter about the fuel system, if its got carbs on now instead of injection it should be fine. But if its meant to have a cat, I think they expect a cat to be on it.

I used to a have a couple of single point inj mini coopers, and a few kids had them and they passed the emisions test ok with a de-cat pipe on. I would go and talk to your local mot man

You want to keep the original engine?

If so then the car will need to meet the emmisions limit set for that age of vehicle. If its started off with a cat then I doubt very much that it will pass without it and with carbs on.

anything registered after some date in 93 should have a cat and meet the desigered emissions for the engine size

anything before 93 doesnt require a cat however still needs to meet set emissions for the size of engine

but ive heard quite a few jap tuned cars will pass without a cat

thats what I would have said.

Although my capri that was originally made with no cat and ran on carbs was suppose to put out 1.2 on emmissions, 3 being max limit, she did 4.5. Lucky my MOT tester thought it was hilarious and passed it for me anyway! Speak to your local tester

depends on what emmissions you are allowed on the car...

if you are allowed 1200ppm HC and iirc 5% CO you should get away with it....

anything lower than that you'll end up having to get you're carbs re-tuned every MOT.

i run a zetec on carbs... i failed the MOT at near enough 3000ppm HC and 0.8% CO... retested after a fiddle 700ppm HC and 12-14% CO....

took about 2 hours of fiddling but we got the car through!

whats wrong with throttle bodies? the price difference isnt that much between the two at the end of the day!

anyone can map Throttle bodies nowadays but only a handfull of people can map and tune carbs properly nowadays... and its getting less and less
