That would be quite enough, you´re absolutely right, did not think of that. Maybe the starter needs som maintenance? Would bad brushes be enough to cause that?

I have some trouble with the starter motor/starting on a 1954 Popular 103-104E. The motor turns the engine but as soon as the engine coughs, the starter motor would release and turn unloaded. I tried a replacement starter motor but the shaft was bent and it got stuck before even turning. Then i moved the spring loaded pinion a bit further so it would come out a bit more, by removing the cotter pin and losening the retaining nut a few turns. I checked the function out of the car and it seems normal. It seemed to work but the engine was warm and started lite a dream even with the silly starter motor. With the engine cold it would release as soon as the engine coughs. I suspect the car only works on 3 cylinders, i will try for compression on both valves and piston rings. But it should start anyway, new plugs, clean ignition system, good battery, idle adjusted etc. The starter gives me a headache, what could possibly cause the pinion to jump back so soon, it is not even worn?

Hi! Bruno in Stockholm, Sweden I am taking care of a lovely 1954 Popular 104E, left hand drive. I took care of this car when the original owner was alive, now his daughter owns it and has requested my help to have it up and running again. I have no commercial interest in that, the original owner was a dear friend, it´s my way to pay him a tribute and take care of his heritage. He owned a MG TC as new and drove it all year round with a smile on his face until just a few years before he passed, this is a cab and with the Swedish weather in mind you could say he was VERY dedicated to motoring. The car is still in owned by the family. During the Seventies he was given two 104E, one for spares and one in better condition wich i the one i take care of. Spares from the other car are available ready, complete engine, gearbox and more. That was the family classic car as it would hold 4 inclusive the driver, the MG TC and the wife´s MG A being roadsters. His daughter loves the Pop and she is dying to be able to drive it properly again, right now she would not dare to drive anywhere without standby emergency help staff back home, a good husband and a towing line. I may have a question or two to ask... I am 53, mechatronician, building custom items for different purposes. Other interests (apart from family, music etc) are old Velosolex mopeds and classic Russian Ural and Dnepr (Neval or Cossack in UK) sidecar-motorcycles.
