Hope you won't be bored but here's a short report on this rallye.
Will put up some more pics of the other Escorts in a few days.
This was my first outing in the Twin Cam.
Sunday
No problems at the vérifs.
Nice blue jackets received but not very practical. They will show the oil stains!!
I was interviewed for the local TV station. Have asked for a copy but the guy wasn't very enthusiastic.
Dinner and briefing at the hôtel.
Monday
Not too early start, we were running at No 25
Raining. No choice of tyres , we have to run on what we agreed yesterday. That is Vredestein Icetrac studded. I think the studs are likely to get rusty.
A good start as Jean Marc breaks my chrono and the electronic rally timer that was serviced in the UK before the rally has decided not to work.We are left with his digital chrono.
However he drops this just after we start the first regularité and it won't work; we finish by luck without too many penalties.
After lunch on the ascent of the col de Culvillat we had some snow. An Austin Healey had gone off in to the ditch and the road was blocked by a Mercedes.
A good laugh while we were waiting. Some Belgians mocking my accent and me offering to piss in their direction. In fact someone does piss on the Austin Healey to try and clear the snow!
As soon as the road is clear we get through. The studded tyres work at last.
Sadly a decision is made to give all but two a maximum.
We end the day 43rd. Not helped by another maximum which we challenge. The organisers agree it looks suspect but they cannot see why it has happened and we can't prove it is wrong. We have to accept it.
Tuesday
A better day but we still manage to get a maximum owing to a navigation fault in a regularité section! Not helped by a mistake in the road book.
The day finishes with a regularité on the ice circuit at Chamrousse. Much better this year as last year we were blocked twice.Jean Marc says we should do an extra lap and we get penalised for it !! Others do more than that and a penalised even more.
The car is vibrating badly and when we get back we find that a propshaft universal joint is in bad shape. The boot has jammed shut and we try to get in through from the inside but can't get the seat out. The boot is too packed anyway. Suddenly it opens. The lock barrel is shot.So we take it out and use elastics to hold the lid down.
We decide to continue as it is the rear joint and if it breaks there won't be any damage.
We have moved up 5 places.
Excellent buffet at the hôtel and a fair amount of wine is drunk to brace us for the vibrations tomorrow.
Wednesday.
I have to take it easy on the liaison sections and try to keep in time but without stressing the UJ.
Sadly we get another near maximum on a regularité when Jean Marc misses a turn.
Two cars have passed us and it is now up to me to catch up. I manage to pass both but we are still well behind at the next control.
At the end of the day we visit the circuit at Lans en Vercors. It is a mixture of mud and melted snow. The timing is tough and includes the snowy ascent out of the circuit to the control.
I have to say I was concerned that I would stuff the car and I eased up. There were no really soft snow banks. There was nothing to prove or gain at that point.
The 100km run back to the hôtel was managed gently, avoiding the vibrations as much as possible.
The evening and prizegiving were at the Casino at Aix les Bains.
Thursday.
A 10 hour straight drive with the trailer to get back home.
Summary
I had hoped that we would do better. However the studded tyres were still pretty good on the tarmac! It has to be said that Jean Marc is a driver rather than a navigator, but he does well.
Next year we must do better!!
