When our land rover was stolen, a couple of weeks went by with the policehaving a few reports of seeing it about, until one evening the police phoned and said they'd found it stuck in the woods and it was going nowhere. They said they'd go back in the morning when it would be easier to retrieve, but me (7 at the time) my dad and my mum went to check up on it, to hear it being revved heavily in the woods. MY dad waved his torch around and shouted a lot and he stayed with it while me and my mum ran back through the woods to find a phone. We found it in a bomb crater up to its axles in mud, and they had a plastic beach spade they were using The local farmer who pulled it out even got one of his tractors stuck trying, but no doubt between the time the police notified us and when they were planning to retrieve it the buggers would have torched it, and if they waited then they would have caught the scumbags.
