Bored as hell having no luck getting a job so decided I need to get into an old hobby and spent this morning spraying up my old Tamiya Blackfoot R/C Ford F150 monster truck as Bigfoot in dark blue, and ran it round the garden a bit, and then wondered what it'd take to get the old buggy my brother's left on my wardrobe going. He used to have the front of the box as a poster in his room as it was proper old-skool and I've only ever seen pictures of him using it on the beach, searched it on the web and found out it's the "holy grail of Tamiya R/C cars" as stated by various websites including Wikipedia - its a Sand Scorcher, finished exactly as on the box and apparently was only Tamiya's sixteenth R/C kit and only the second R/C with proper off road buggy suspension.

It was released in 1981, and was preceeded in being their first proper buggy by one month, and apparently lots of people try to fake it with later bodyshells on other bodies, as my Blackfoot truck re-uses a shell from their fourth release. Its the coolest R/ car I've ever seen though. I'll have to have a dig around though as I was halfway through ressurecting his racing old airboat too with a new airoplane motor - I doubt that one would ever be re-released as its a vicious ol thing with fingers, but should be real fun out on the marshes. Anyone elese got any cool vintage R/C motors. Seems Tamiya are into retro stuff at the moment as noticed Clod Buster and the Lunch Box dodge van are in the shops - I wanted Clod Buster when I was a kid!!

My trial garden run went better this time though as I seem to be a much better driver!!

thats a cool buggy. i sold one on ebay a few month back, good original condition £150! . tamiya did the same chassis with a beetle shell that is even rarer. one is rough rider and other is sand scortcher the same time tamiya did a toyota hi lux with all alloy chassis real leaf springs and proper axles that look like english axles with diff in centre and prop shafts and 3 speed trans. a friend has one and they are making over £500 on the bay. always loved my rc stuff but struggle to find time now. mardave do some great stuff too  oh yeah my bro has a midnight pumpkin.

It is the one with the beetle body, painted as per on the box which is difficult as it has some awkward curvatures to get at, a mate has another old monster truck but I don't think its tamiya.

Hi Nick.

I used to collect classic tamiya models up until about 4 years ago.

I had at least 8 sand scorchers and four rough riders, plus absalutely tons of spares for them. All kinds off literature too, which now can be expensive.

I also had a super champ which was an improved sandscorcher type chassis and a smarter body than the rough rider..

As i am a vw nut or i was a vw nut ,i just had to have them as they are true gems.

I used to advertise in the rc mags for tamiya parts wanted and the phone never stopped all week long.

This was before ebay became what it is now.Where anyone can sell stuff on.

I also had an original f150 truck with the proper body too, which was poor but chassis was vgood it went for daft money when i sold it on ebay .

I had a few others besides .

I sold the lot to put towards my massive collection of rare scalextric cars/buildings etc

All of which i have also now sold to plow into my mk1 tina and a few other things

I had all kinds, sold the lot now.I miss playin about with them..

Good that you have something to keep you occupied matey.

Take care Tim

i collect old tamiyas, and yes, it is the holy grail alongside the ranger and super champ, in fact all the old metal chassis models are saught after.

the 3 speeds are the most saught after of all like the hilux and blazer.
