mk2_escort_chick Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Went to the hospital y'day for a consultation about the curve in my spine. The average back has an angle of around 55 degrees. Mine is at 78!!!! I was told that i will need surgery to sort my back out which involves 2 big metal rods and some pins (or something like that). Serious stuff!! He was telling me that it is as serious as having open heart surgery. As you can guess this came as a bit of a shock. I'll be in hospital for 2 weeks, out of work for around 4 1/2 months and wont be able to get back to normal things for around 9 months! I'm scared sh!tless about having it done, but feel that I have no choice in the matter. If I dont get it done, I'll be the female version of the hunchback in about 10 years Not a good look There's a 1 in 1000 chance that I'll be paralised and i said that i'm worried about it because i wont be able to drive Dad reasured me that if the worst did happen, he'd make sure i could drive again... as we know someone who is paralised that races in my dad's old race series. After I get the go ahead, its 20 weeks till the op I'm currently waiting for the letter from him so i can go and see my gp to get everything in motion. Just thought I'd keep you guys and gals up to date... I'M SCARED!!!!!!!

johnny_h Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 That's gotta be scary! Best of luck with the op. I'm sure you will be fine.
Copey Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 wow, sounds rather serious, good luck, am sure you will be fine!!
Smudger105e Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 1 in 1000? Those are very long odds, and the risk is therefore negligible. Take 20 packs of playing cards. Write your name on one card. Now draw a card at random. THAT is the chance of you becoming paralised. Chin up sweetie, and I'm sure you will be able to make some OSF meets when you are recovering And think of all the running about you can get people doing for you!
Mrs O/H/C Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 my dad had a op for curve of the spine and hes ok ...still drives and rides a motorbike. i know its easy for all of us to say you will be ok ...but its still scary for you..so try and not worry too much !!
mk2_escort_chick Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 Thank you all for your kind words- but i'm still scared! lol Kind of the norm thing to feel though. I'm worried about silly lil things too though- about going to the loo when i'm in hosp etc. I'm so daft
Chris! Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 that doesnt sound good but in the long run it does you will be fine good luck with it
mk2_escort_chick Posted August 25, 2007 Author Report Posted August 25, 2007 When I find out what is going on and when i'm in- i'm expecting a few visits!
Mrs O/H/C Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 your not daft...its normal to be scared and worry about the little things!! we will all be here to support you through the next year.
Copey Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 yeah its perfectly natural to be frightened, hell if i was in ur position i would be shittin bricks probably!! think ur very brave!!
Smudger105e Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Thank you all for your kind words- but i'm still scared! lol Kind of the norm thing to feel though. I'm worried about silly lil things too though- about going to the loo when i'm in hosp etc. I'm so daft When I was in hospital some years ago (got knocked off my motor bike) I was given a plastic bottle to pee in. Ever tried to pee, laying down, in a bed, quietly, with loadsa people round? Impossible!! And you girlies have it worse It will be fine, and if there's anything at all anyone on here can do for you, let us know? Instead of grapes, we could send you parts for Jelly
Mr Sam Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 i dont blame you for being scared one bit but all will be fine
MK5 Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 I know almost how you're feeling. Had major hip surgery myself 2 years ago. The wait for the hospital date is as agonising as having the op!! And they just love to tell you all the things that could go wrong - for me it was that my hip could become infected and they'd have to remove the joint completely!! As it happened i was supposed to have been in for 7 days. i was discharged after 5. recovery was quite long but i moved 200 miles 2 months after the op!! I dare say I'll see you in the next few weeks - you can bend my ear if you like
Pipster007 Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 It's got to be better than knowing that in 10 yrs time, you'll be staring at your feet. Everything will be fine and it'll work out OK. You have plenty of support here
over_head_cam Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I'm sure the OSF medical team could sort you out with a propshaft and a few jubilee clips Seriously though, don't worry about it. They know what they're doing and you'll be fine :D
mk2_escort_chick Posted August 26, 2007 Author Report Posted August 26, 2007 Aww, thank you for all your kind words. My mind is deffo made up about going through with it. Just got to wait patiently for the letter I need to give to my gp. Spoke to my boss at work and he said my health is far more important than worrying about work. But job = money, which = parts for jelly! It's gonna be scary stuck in a hosp on my own for 2 weeks. I know that I'll have you guys and gals support and my family's. Well you lot are part of my family i guess And yes, instead of grapes- I'll happily accept parts for Jelly.
Mr Sam Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 im sure if Dean posts hospital details etc up you'll get plenty of visitors to keep you company
Smudger105e Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 Most hospitals have tinternet access from the bed, so you can spam, spam, spam!!
mk2_escort_chick Posted August 26, 2007 Author Report Posted August 26, 2007 im sure if Dean posts hospital details etc up you'll get plenty of visitors to keep you company Yay!!! Most hospitals have timternet access from the bed, so you can spam, spam, spam!! Lol! I think i do enough of that as it is
MK5 Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 i think you'll be surprised about being in hospital - i was glad of the peace and quiet and a chance to get away from everyone!! you probably won't feel like seeing anyone for the first few days after the op - i know i didn't
mk2_escort_chick Posted November 10, 2007 Author Report Posted November 10, 2007 Right-update time... Went back to the hospital yesterday and was told that I need an mri scan before they operate. I'll get my operation no more than 18 weeks after i have the scan. My consultant thinks that I'll be having it around easter time (March). Just waiting on my mri scan appointment and its full steam ahead. It means that I'll miss all/majority of next season But I'll make sure that Dean is double enthusiastic at the shows to make up for me not being there I'm scared, but frustrated in a way. I just want to go and get the op over and done with. I know they need to do the scan, but its just more waiting. *sighs* It'll come round quick. xxx
