mk3tina Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 ive been making up a roll cage for the mk3 capri, the cage i got was a new safety devices cage, but it was for a nissan micra got it because there are no capri cages, and it was £50 , now obviously ive had to modify it somewhat to fit the capri, what i was wondering though, is although the sticker on it says do not remove, is it really needed?and what for, ive kept it on, its just working around it so i dont damage it, the cage still has its numbers stamped on it. also, where can i find a bolt on cross brace?
c1arke Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 if you have modded the cage as in cut it i would expect it to be obsolete cause you have weekend it a little
Stu_B Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 I guess it's on there for scrutineering if the cage is used in competition. It won't matter if you take it off as you've modded the cage & probably won't be using it for competition.
mk3tina Posted August 31, 2007 Author Report Posted August 31, 2007 i see, well to be honest, i only ever intend on doing maybe a track day once in a blue moon, and even then any car is allowed to hoon around the track, i seriously dont think id ever get it into competition racing. i only wanted the cage really to complete the race replica sort of thing i was going for.
Stu_B Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 Got any pics mate? How much chopping was needed as I want a cage for my cortina & this is one option, probably cheaper & easier than building a cage from scratch!
Tripled-X Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 My cage has been modded and powder coated, no stickers or markings anywhere when i first bought it but because it's really only for show it doesn't matter.
mk3tina Posted August 31, 2007 Author Report Posted August 31, 2007 no pics yet mate, its still in the process of getting finished, ive done all the welding to it, its just sanding down the filler ive put over them, just so its all smooth and uniform looking (yes my welding is top notch thank you very much!) it was a fair bit of work, i had to cut the rear trangle pieces off that conect to the rear arches, cut the join between the two tubes, open them up a bit and re-weld them to the main hoop after sortening them in length, if you get what i mean. for the main hoop i had to cut it in half and literally only take a mm's out of it, i then slugged it with some thick tubing on the inside to add strength, and welden it all back together. took me about a 5 days to do in about 1 hour sessions in the garage, this includes welding on the strengthening plates on the floor and wheel arches for the cage to sit on. although the cage really is just for show ive done my best to make it at least a functioning cage if for some reason i actually do flip the capri, plus it will add some chassis stiffening.
tim Posted August 31, 2007 Report Posted August 31, 2007 as said about the sticker is only for comptition scruts to check homolagtion numbers and dates,as its cut then it is non in volid for surious competition use and SD wont be lieable if the cage fails
Retromotorsport Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Personally i cant agree with cutting and shutting of cages main tubes , each tube should be in one piece ... yes i know you have sleeved it inside .. but that makes a solid section in the tube, that tube will now not do what its suposed to do, ie deform. I have seen some terrible cages and the damage they have caused because the have fractured at the wrong point . ... tubes so strong where its been sleeved that the bolts have sheared and the tube has speaered the pasenger. Cages colasping and traping people. It the same when people weld braces into a bolt in cage, done wrongly this can cause serious injury. 4Parajon... could have bent you some tubes for that cage ... as for the sticker .. remove it, its for a legal cage , and yours i'm affriad isnt. Sorry if thats harsh but i've always been for safety over looks.. hence why get so angry when i see extinguishers strapped to the backstays for the " race look " ... the only race that that would be in is the race to the hospital when your paralysed because its come loose and smacked you in the neck, snapping it !!! Yes it did happen at a trackday years ago ... the guys in a wheelchair.
mk3tina Posted September 1, 2007 Author Report Posted September 1, 2007 i completely agree retro, safety is paramount in any situation, ill take that sticker off then as i dont need to worry about it anymore. i only did really what i had to do to the cage to make it fit and did the best job i could, the sleeve is about 6 inches long in total so 3 either side of the weld in the centre.
