andytechno Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 atm my beloved mk2 escorts got a gayomatic box, when ure driving and you come to lights or traffic the and u come to pull off again the car revs to like 3-4000 revs and thgen suddenly locks into gear and jerks u forward, now if ure on a hill its not good.can anyone tell me why this might be. please dont say"get rid of the automatic cus there crap"because i already know, and when i can afford it and the time is right the dodgy crossflow and the gayomatic box is goin.
bmxdave Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Check theres fresh oil in there. Other then that, instead of fixing it which could get expensive, especially if you cant do the work yourself, cope with it until you can sort the manual gearbox.
jimbo Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Mines just started doing this too, today! It's very disconcerting! Having recently changed the radiator, I lost a fluid in the process, so when this happened today, I performed the fluid level check and found it to be just above the minimum. High on my list is refilling the box. I'll let you know how I get on. Keep me posted of yours Andy.
mk2escortmad Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 hey, there aint nothing wrong with autos mate, some of us HAVE GOT to drive them , i do cuz im disabled....im thinking its your oil, i would check that before anything
bortaf Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Oil level first oil should be pink, if it's brown change it
andytechno Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 i checked the oil weh i had it about 6 monthed ago.and ime sure it was brown u know.the only problem is i dont know where to fill it up. escort mad for ure reason on autos fair play, the problem is u cant get out of ure car full what its capable of. jimbo ill keep posting to let u know whats goin on m8
mk2escortmad Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 the gearbox oil shud be red mate, and the dipstick for it is located near the carb close to the bulk head.....hope this helps
andytechno Posted October 24, 2007 Author Report Posted October 24, 2007 changed the oil.in fact it was dry of it.still revs to like 3000 the suddenly locks into gear.it feels like when ure driveing a manual and the clutch slips and the car revs and goes nowhere then kicks in. i hate it with a passion.roll on the manual box and the 2.0 pinto
ASBO CAPRI Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 If you've been driving it with old manky oil in it its probably clogged up all the oil ways in the box. Think u can get flushing oil that u use to clean out the oil ways before putting new oil in. Failing that it could be a knacked torque converter.
Muttley MK2 Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 It sounds like the clutch and brake bands within the gearbox are slipping. This could be due to oil contamination or they may need adjusting. They may also be worn out!! Have you cleaned out the filter in the sump? You will have to remove the sump to do this. You say the oil was brown, did it smell burnt? If it did the its curtains for the box.
bortaf Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 if it was dry the box is most likely fecked mate
andytechno Posted October 25, 2007 Author Report Posted October 25, 2007 all thses posts sound pritty good.last night i checked and the box was dry.it did smell a little burnt.i filled it back up but no joy.ill put more oil in tonight and try again to see if i can get it working again.failing that ill condem the box as being fooked an have to repace it.
oliwally Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 How are you checking the oil level? You need to have the oil hot and engine running. Run the box through the gears and couple of times,RD212DRD212DRP that sort of thing, Then Quickly go and check level, dip the stick twice. Should be between the 2 marks and pink/dark red colour. If the oil levels fine then its bye bye box.
andytechno Posted October 25, 2007 Author Report Posted October 25, 2007 nice 1 wally ill sort that.later after work.fingers crossed.
jimbo Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Anyone know which is the right Castrol ATF for the Mk2 Auto box. I know Q-matic does the job, but I can't find that anywhere!
Muttley MK2 Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I throw Dextron into everything and I have never had any probs but I think you need Ford type g fluid to be right
jimbo Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 The fluid that is in there at the moment is clean, so should I just top up, or drain what's left and start again? Also, given the trouble I'm having getting the right auto fluid, I was going to put in some Dextron. However, I was worried about mixing and matching fluids, but given how much remains in the box when draining, I guess i can't help mix to an extent, is that correct?
jimbo Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 Hi Andy? How have you got on with your Auto box? What fluid did you use?
