what about a 40 dfav jetted for a 3.0, will i make the car go as well as if it had a 38dgas on it?

No there be fine if the jets are changed to suit!

 

Think about a 1600 cross-flow, you see them on 40's and 45's so a 1600 pinto aint no different if its ported and prep'd properly then carb's then anythings possible!
