Burns Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 antz, just take as much off that you can before you take it out of the car, all manifolds and stuff. then if you use the engine mounts to lift you can tilt the engine back so the gearbox is pointing towards the floor and lift the whole lot out might be worth getting some thick rag for the end of the gearbox so that if it does touch your bodywork it shouldn't scratch
FlashCadillac Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 if plans change and it ends up being sunday, give me a buzz and ill come over
antz Posted April 11, 2008 Author Report Posted April 11, 2008 cheers burns and flash Ill try it without the box and if i cant undo it then ill lift the box out with it
radar tech Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 take the engine / box out in a oner. less fookin about matey
emu Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 yeah but you cant get the box out and leave the engine in the car you will see how far forward you have to move the engine before its seperate from the box... its a good 3 inch if the box is coming out at some point, do it now or you will have to take the engine out.... AGAIN You can take a standard escort 'box off a crossflow engine without taking the engine out of the car. Loads of room, even with a standard tunnel. ......just jack the front of the engine up and slide the box backwards.

emu Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Thats faiy snuff. Like I say, I used to whip the box off the back and then rope the engine out by hand. You dont really want to be lifting the engine AND gearbox with a tow rope whilst stood the inner wings Now the pinto and 5 speed in the an escort is a different matter We dropped that in from the top as one peice when we originally put it in. Dropped it all out the bottom and lifted the shell on and off this last time though
Tom Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Mate, do it like this. Man up, get on your back and pull the gearbox onto your chest and then to the floor - this should take you an hour or so as its only the prop, 'box mount, gearstick and bellhousing bolts and its free Then take everything off the engine in situ and lift it straight out. If there's a couple of you you can take it out all as one but you'll need to get the car quite high at the front as the gearbox needs to point down - this way's a bit more tricky but with care works well. taking the engine out and leaving the box in is a pain in the arse. it takes loads of wiggling and fukin about.
tim Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 ive done engine on its own,box on its own and engine box joined and its so much easier overall to do both in 1 go. when i did mine start of the year i done the engine.box joined, removed every thing from the engine, ran 2 strapes,1 under the engine/bell housing and the front strape in front of the engine mount.you just have to man handle the sump to miss the slam panel and the box to miss the bulkhead,,took me and a mate hour or so to do it not mine but give u an idea
lee_capri Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 no when you put it all back together get a new thrust bearing ive had this no end of time's get it all back in their and it is clanning away like big ben
emu Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 If there's a couple of you you can take it out all as one but you'll need to get the car quite high at the front as the gearbox needs to point down - this way's a bit more tricky but with care works well. Go with Toms explanation. but if you must do it in one then jack the back of the car up rather than the front, that way you dont have to tip it all quite so vertical to get the box out past the crossmember
emu Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 Thank you Ive a feeling thats how it says to do it in the Haynes Book of lies (We all had to learn sometime!!!)
walsh253 Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 its straight forward so long as you disconnect everything, rad out, rope around the mounts and lift with hoist. dont make the rope to long because of height in the garage, its easier with 2 people cos you dont want to scratch the paint work.rag on the end of the gearbox, move the hoist forward as you go depending on the angle of the engine then one of you grab the gearbox and lift over the front panel.once youve done it the first time its a piece of wee wee
