I have decided to remove the sparco harnesses from my capri, before I sell it as they'll come in usefull one day. So I found my old seatbelts in the loft and got them out. Problem is, they are wound all the way in. And when I try and pull the belt, it locks solid, like its meant to in a crash. Whats happened and how do I get the belt to come back out?

take the plastic cover off the reel. inside should be what looks like a white plastic cog or wheel. inside that is a ball bearing or a locking pin. you gotta stop that from moving, pull enough out and put a clamp or something on the belt to stop it going back in. release the ball bearing or pin. bolt it in. take off clamp. ta da!!!!

thats how i do my escort ones, transit etc etc

hope that helps

seconded..

i had the same problem.. you can do it freehand providing you keep the reel level

oh and fancy selling a capri and keeping an escort

(waits for slaggin off to arrive)

wish I had the money to keep it. But the capri is old and worn out, and the escort is mint. I would keep it, if I didnt have 5 bikes in the garage 8)

Just bolt the reel into the car and pull the belt out gently. They work on a pendulum, so if it isn't level it will keep the reel locked.

That is how a pendulum can save a life

cheers mate, I was wondering why they worked perfect in the car, but not in the kitchen!

sorted now, managed to keep them really level on the floor, and gently pull at the belt and its came right out. Its interesting how the mechanism works much better with only a small amount of belt rolled round it. With the full amount it hardly works at all.
