“Plate type” limited slip differential

When the grip of the driving wheels on the road surface is less than perfect, namely, when the distribution of torque to the driving wheels needs to be as balanced as possible, regardless of their precarious grip conditions on the ground, a limited slip differential is used.

 

 

 

How it works:: The locking action is due to the internal friction inside the differential. The braking function takes place between the plates, arranged symmetrically in the casing. In fact the input torque in the casing is not transmitted directly to the spider, as occurs in conventional differentials, but it firstly passes through the stay bosses, which cannot rotate in relation to the casing but only move axially. This movement is due to the shape of the contact surfaces between the differential spider and the stay bosses, which are oblique, and thus generate an axial force during the relative movement.

The outer plates are integral with the differential casing and the inner ones with the crown wheels; hence the axial force generated by the bosses creates a pressure on the contact surfaces that can reach the point of blocking the motion associated with the crown wheels and thus of the axle shafts.

“Plate type” limited slip differentials have a constant locking moment due to the preload of the plates, thereby ensuring the availability of driving torque immediately even in extremely adverse driving conditions. The locking effect is also proportionate with the load conditions, increasing with the increase of the difference in torque.

 

 

 

Setting:: The locking rate is between 15 and 80%, and depends on the following parameters:

 

number of plate friction surfaces. Changing the pairing of the plates increases or lowers the friction surface, and, as a consequence, the locking rate.

angle of the oblique surfaces of the bosses.

preload on the plates.
