Has anyone ever managed to fit a fibreglass bonnet but still keep the original bonnet opening mechanism and not bonnet pins?

Just been spit balling ideas and wondered if its possible and would work in the long run :?

they may do but everyone Ive seen using a fibreglass bonnet just uses bonnet pins instead.

I was wondering if the firbreglass bonnet was actually strong enough to take the standard components for a normal bonnet catch or weather itd rip to bits.

you can either buy the fibre glass bonnets with the internals or bond some folded ally to the inside where you want to mount to original hinges if your just getting the skin. then drill ali and we used riv nuts to make life easier. we used body filler to bond ali on and then did few layer of fibre glass over it to make sure. also as we had just bought a skin we did an x in the middle of the bonnet to give it bit more strength as when they get very hot (we used ours for rallying so you may not need to) we found it did sag a bit. hope that helps. lg

The smith & deakin one s for the capri come with the strengthened sections in so you can use your original fittings, thats for the capri tho, have a look on there website.

just remembered how we did the aluminium brackets more. the part we folded and bonded onto the bonnet had elongated holes drilled in it for adjustability then we made another plate to go behind it that had the riv nuts on so could adjust the bonnet easily to get good gaps. lg

think you are right there mate. The bonnet is in minty minty condition with not a patch of rust anywhere....except two dents right on the top of it

suppose I can add it to my list of THINGS TO SORT OUT when i find a bodyshop I trust to restore her aging looks

If its just a couple of dents in the bonnet then why not see about getting one of the paintless dent boys to take a look at it for you?

i have fibre glass bonet and doors, all use the original hinges etc, the bonet even had metal threads built in to it so i could just bolt my hinges straight on, uses the original locking mechanism too. old ford autos :mrgreen:

What about one of the others?? I only suggest it because some of them are really good, and no paint means no mis-match. Perhaps ask at some of your local main dealers (not just Ford) and see if they can recommend anyone
