CzecheredFlag Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 I recently joined up here after buying a Mk2 Escort Estate (in my sig). Its a 1980 V plate in quite tidy condition for its age. My problem is i don't know what to do with it. It is a left hand drive 1.3L. I have a few plans in mind, but my main question is, with it being LHD, do i convert it to RHD and what do i need to do to convert it? It would be a shame to convert it, the reason it is LHD is for the 1st 6yrs of its life it spent on an RAF base in Germany, before being imported to the UK in 1986 via Marshalls Garage at Bawtry, nr Doncaster. It was the bought and owned for 23 yrs by the previous owner to me. It has covered 99000kms during its life, and has every MoT since coming to the UK. Should i convert it to RHD and enjoy it, keep it LHD and use it for shows etc, or should i sell it and find something more suitable?? I'm new to old skool Ford ownership as well, but have always had a soft spot for the Mk1 and Mk2 Escort, more so since taking up motorsport photography as a hobby (mainly rally).
RossMK2 Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 1.convert to rhd2.put rs front spoiler3.keep square headlights4. 4 spokes or minilights
Savvi Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Leave it as it is, if you want a rhd one go and buy this, not mine by the way. http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/cla ... arno/71275
antz Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 your car so its up to YOU what to do with it in the end. If it was mine I would tidy it up, leave it as a left hooker, go for standard looks inside and out but lowered 2 inches all round with a hot xflow/pinto under the bonnet and some 7 inch revolution wheels. standard bumpers, lights, everythign standard as it was from the factory. Mexico spoilers belong on mexicos only in my own opinion. Check out NOODLES estate as he has done a sterling job with his:
RossMK2 Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 if you can really tidy it up keep it original
CzecheredFlag Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 I was considering tidying it up, dropping a 2 litre Pinto under the bonnet with a 5 speed box, lowering it slightly, with a set of dished alloys, and maybe even removing the side windows (or heavy tinting) and turning it into a van I don't want to go over the top with it, but i want to make it a little more useable, but not an everyday car, i have a Mk3 Estate for that as well as a Vauxhall Frontera.
Mr2Caps Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 At the risk of repeating what has already been said it is your car and you do what you want with it, however in my opinion lowered = good, 2.0 pinto+5 speed = good, lowering and alloys = good. Turning into a van, can see where you are coming from here, if it was me I would try to give it the sort of stock from the factory look, if you look at the car derived vans that are around they all tend to have a recess around the infill panels where the windows would normally be, this is the sort of look I would be personally trying to replicate. However, it is not an easy job to get right! I can remember the likes of redefusion and DER television rentals using escort estates instead of vans when I was younger, but these just had frosted or stickered rear side windows as far as I can remember! I'd probably keep it left hand drive as well, just to be different! Good luck with it!
