How much power can a Escort Rs 2000 english/sailsbury axle handle?

i presume the weak link are the shafts?

just the cost of a good atlas is a lot and wondered who uses what and what Lsd would be best for cossie power 330 ish bhp

Thanks in advance

A lot of the equation depends on the use of the car. on the street, the tyres will lose grip before the axle lets go normally, but if you're on slicks doing the 1/4 mile, a hard launch with less than 200bhp can smash an English.

its a power / grip ratio thing ... 1000 ft/lb with no grip and the axle will last years

200ft/lb and loads of grip, you can blow it in seconds

Or think about it this way...

Your up the pod in the right lane, wheelspin in first, snatch second and it grips, your doing 60mph when the shaft snaps and with the front wheels unloaded the car turns towards the wall and .... BANG .. your engine is now sitting next to you and the turbo is glowing on your thigh.

Or worse, your in the left lane, shaft snaps and BANG, you've just slammed into your mates car running in the right lane

Then you have the CWP... pulling hard out of a bend .. and you crack some teeth off the CWP, this causes instant lock up of the rear, like pulling the handbrake up mid corner...its going to be messy

Always love your answers Gary - leaves no room for debate

So the axle will die before any damage is done to the propshaft? :?

some pictures of my shafts, snapped both & blew my diff in 1 launch. On slicks at santa pod with 185bhp pinto, done this just launching in 1st. Twisted the ends of the shafts off

I am having an atlas narrowed & built soon as its always in the back of your mind when driving your car hard "will it break" & you don't want to be worrying about that you just want to be worrying about the next bend

Well I think I know which option I'd prefer, but I guess it depends how big and angry your mate is!

I've been here  - but when I felt the weight of an atlas I just couldn't bring myself to fit one!

Uprated shafts in mine with tranX diff and big side gears. Seems ok so far.

Dave Colledge ran his (Very light car) 10.6 on an english.

Mark Puddy used to use an English in his MK2 Cortina behind his YB with about 300hp back in the day when tyres had no grip.

The torque will make it noisey in time though - with a YB weight is less important as you have access to ample power! :ykt:

As said though - lack of mechanical sympathy, grip, power and weight of the vehicle will all have an effect on axle life. Retro's advise is good and safe!

Cheers Toby,

And i think the reason some quick cars nowadays can get way with it is down to their axle location, Daves using American style traction bars, a refined version of slapper bars, the Harris's have their tricks etc ...

And then we have the norm.. set of lesser tramps and lowering blocks, and a heated wheel skipping up in the aire and slamming back into the ground at a gizzalion RPM and wants to get back down to 6,000 rpm you get the breakages.

Oh and check out the weight of a 'bullet proof' English against the ...ermm 'Bigger bullet proof' standard Atlas ..its not that different in weight

Atlas is is then guys :D

Just wanted opinions i know for myself that the atlas is strong cos i have one in my tina and 370bhp(at times) with a plate type LSD :D

Thanks
