robxr2 Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 hi ive got a mk1 fiesta which is on a Q plate and want to put the black and white plates on but was wondering how much trouble it my cause with the police what do you reckon? is it worth it?
over_head_cam Posted October 18, 2009 Report Posted October 18, 2009 Probably not worth the hassle m8. The rules have recently changed I think too which makes it easier for them to take the plate off you and also there's the fine
FredTransit Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 As Q plates are agless I don't think you can. BUT if they take it off you all you will get is another Q plate, so no loss
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 19, 2009 Admin Report Posted October 19, 2009 But you can be fined for it if they decide that they want to go down that route and I did read somewhere that you could get points too
Ken B Posted October 19, 2009 Report Posted October 19, 2009 It not just a question of taking your plate of you, this will only happen if its a cherished/private plate. If you are a persistant offender for plates now, They can actually de register your car, so you have to go thru the ball ache of re registering not to mention the cost. Obviously this is an extreme case scenario, but is it really worth the hassle over a number plate?
FredTransit Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 The DVLA own all registrations, they just allow you to display it on an already registered car. In the case of 'private' plates, you buy the permission to display it. If you dick about with a displayed reg (black and white on the wrong age, silly fonts or spacing) they can withdraw that permission on any reg, even one that came with the car. As any vehicle has to have a registration, they have to give you a registration to replace it. I don't know if you have to pay for it or do the paperwork, but you would have to pay for a replacement tax disc and MOT cert, the same as when you transfer a plate I would think. I don't know anybody who had a Q plate inflicted on them recently, so don't know for sure.
Copey Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 i have b/w plates on my mk3 capper and have no problems on a Q plate i should think you will be alright, most coppers see an old car and just assume its right to have b/w plates
Admin Mk2Jo Posted October 20, 2009 Admin Report Posted October 20, 2009 I have black and silver on mine but I know it is not legal and if I get caught then I have no room to complain if I get nicked for it

In The Pit Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 Black and silver plates are only allowed on vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1973. Otherwise they are illegal and an MOT failure. Not sure where the law stands on a Q plate but I guess if the vehicle was obviously built before 1973 it would be fine but as the Fiesta came out in 1977 it would be illegal.
Daggle Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 In my best Louie Walsh voice, "It's a no from me I'm afraid" Stick with yellow and white plates, it's down to the age of the vehicle and when it was first registered, a Mk1 Fiesta clearly wasn't built pre 73 so must have yellow and white, not black and white. However the risks have been pointed out to you, so you take ya chances. It's a £60 fine, no points, however persistant piss takers can have the number plate removed and a Q plate or other age related plate given, which in your case isn't too much of an issue, BUT! do you really want to give the goverment £60 of your hard earned?? The date of first registration of your vehicle is on the Police National Computer so can be easily checked, plus as it has been said before it's gonna be on the MOT test as well. As for you Jo, you should know better Mother Hen!!
