Hi,

Been browsing for a while, but thinking more seriously now about getting into old skool Fords.

I'm a mechanic and so have access to all the equipment I could ever need to take on some sort of project, but what I lack is experience and knowledge in this area.

I'd be looking to take something back to a bare shell and build it up again from scratch. I love the look of the Mk3 Cortina and hope to pick up a 2 door at some point (knowing full well how rare they are).

What I'm wondering is, how well could something this old handle in a fast road situation, compared to a modern car? I say could because I know as standard it would be fairly poor, but it could be made considerably better with time and money. I drive a 2003 Toyota Celica at the moment, for example, and it handles very well. Would I be dissapointed with an old ford in comparison?

I did look into space frames and love the idea of converting the front and back to a frame and changing to a double wishbone setup. Although I do have experience with metal work, though, setting up suspension correctly seems like a major task. Anyone with experience in this area have any thoughts?

Cheers, and I hope to be able to post my future project on these pages one day!

Let's say I stick in an Atlas axle, 4 link it, plus coilovers (does this sound about right?), would I have something comparable to a modern feeling suspension setup, or would I really have to completely change the whole setup?

Thanks for the welcome! :D
