GT_lenny Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 any one using one on the road? how bad are they?
w p e Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 each to there own. just seen a pair of leaf springs get wrecked on my mates mk2 cortina by useing one on the street
oxb1l Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 I asked this question before and was told not to do it as they are lethal, then whatever floats your boat Bill
Daveyboy20 Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 Good question, I have one sittin on the shelf that was an ebay impulse buy but Im unsure whether or not to fit it? I dont mind some skipping when parking but Ive heard they force understeer at low speeds (which makes sense) dont mind the jippy smoke tastic rear steer handling but dont fancy breaking anything. Im running 265 tyres on the back too which would put more stress on it. What happened to your mates springs dude?
AvantSE Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 When I bought my mk2 back, the previous owner had welded the diff. it was a PITA when manoeuvring and you could feel it skipping around on small roundabouts; I hated it. If you have an accident and your vehicle is inspected by the police for example, and they find a welded diff, it's not going to go well for you...
caprinerd Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 i used a welded diff for 4 years intotal on the road had no issues with it at all except in the wet corners and round abouts were a real handful but thats what i liked about driving it
GT_lenny Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 i think i'll just replace my broken one with a standard one then till i have enough pennies for a slipper
914Driver Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I raced a Triumph Spitfire with a welded diff. Meh. On the road in big sweepers it's OK, pushing the car around the garage just sucks. You're always fighting one wheel or the other. I can imagine around town just turning a corner could be an adventure. Coming off a light with enthusiasm is a hoot! Coming off a light and turning? The rear tries to make yo go straight anyway. Dan
Admin Mk2Jo Posted May 12, 2010 Admin Report Posted May 12, 2010 Darren used to drive his Escort around all the time with the welded diff
Guest cortinamad-gonetoo Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 i think its something youd have to try so you can see for your self if i had a spare welded diff id give it a go but i arnt welding the only one i have
caprinerd Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 dont blame you like has been said its something you really need to try before you comit i get on ok with mine as did posse and a few others but then there are those didnt like it
emu Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I drove mine around welded for a couple of years. To be honest it wasnt the oversteering/understeering/unpredictable animal that many people would have you beleive. The only reason its not in there now is because the juddering and squealing at really low speed made it a complete pig to get in and out of my garage.
Tom Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I loved mine but it did catch me out on the understeer a few times
EscortDan Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 I use one on the road and only pain is the low speed turning reversing etc. as it jumps about a bit but aprt from that it is great fun and very predictable to and easy to slide with. If you have one slap it in and try it, I use it as it is all I have lol!
LUKE261 Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 mines welded, its wickid does skip when parking
