wierd timing drift on a 2L pinto

Hi,

need some help, 1982 Cortina with 1987 2L Pinto engine, Weber 2V Carb,

 

Recently engine started to idle irratically:

 

adjusted ign timing and carb tuning, worked fine for a few weeks,

 

idle went irratic again, stripped and rebuilt carb + manifold + assosiated hoses, re-adjusted ign timing, worked fine for a few weeks,

 

idle went irratic again, checked and re-adjusted ign timing,

fine for a few weeks,

 

yet again, idle went irratic, checked and re-adjusted ign timing, fine for now.

 

does anyone know what causes a pinto's ign timing to drift out during normal operation?

Myself, one other OSF enthusiast and one Weber/pinto enthusiast have all been involved with this frequent retiming and we are all stumped!

my bet is that either the dizzy clamp or the flange on the dizzy is worn, try changing the dizzy clamp see if it stops the timing slipping

Thanks for the pointers,

We've stripped the Dizzy out ans gone over the clamp, gear and other moving parts,

alot of old oil n grease was under and around the clamp, a good clean seems to have settled the drifting for now,

if a bosch dizzy? the bob weights can stick on full advance and cause idle probs. if it happens again remove the cap and gently twist the rotor arm left and right if you here a click the weights had stuck then.check timing before and after
